Apes versus risers..who has installed?

I have 6" PhatII on now, and wanting to get more rise. The Apes have been calling my name for a while..Before I invest in them, I wanted to ask my fellow Nad riders who has installed taller bars, and how tall did you go without having to replace cables,etc.?..The ones I am looking at that I think will work are 1" by 12" tall.. What ya think?

I seen a set on a bike on this forum yesterday and they looked sharp. But I can't remember who's it was. It was in the signature. I just went back and tried to trace my trail and nothing. :) I don't care what they say Tequila don't flush you're blood stream. Somebody with a clear mind ought to be long here directly. :)

Thanks,

Pablo,
Can you give me the details on your bars?..Size and if you had to change the cables, and if so, how much longer you had to go.

Pablo is quite pleased with his Apes these days, he credits them for helping keep him on the bike and upright after a recent deer incident.

I had a "Deer Incident" a year ago. I went rite over the bars. I suppose apes would either grab you or you go through them.

Apes versus risers..who has installed?

I've been posting info on my apes in several threads, but here is a summary. By the way, I'm 6' tall, 33" sleeve length.
  • I started with 13" x 1" apes; didn't have to get longer hoses and cables, but not high enough and still had to lean forward a little, unless I tilted the bars back toward me. [/*:m:hrfp6ixm]
  • I added 2 1/2" riser extensions from Scootworks. This helped a little, but still not high enough and had to reroute cables and hoses to reach.[/*:m:hrfp6ixm]
  • Added 16" x 1" apes and, +4" brake line (+6" not in stock), and +6" clutch hose and throttle cables (bought at <UID>]www.hellrisercustoms.com ); had to solder 6" extensions to all wires. With the 2 1/2" riser extensions this was just about the right height and I was pleased with this set up. When I hit the deer, I bent the left side handle bar into the windshield, so needed to replace.
  • Decided to get 18" x 1 1/4" apes (DCS-18APE from <UID>]www.meancycles.com ) and eliminate the 2 1/2" riser extensions. This is not quite as tall as the previous setup, but not appreciably different in height. The bars are curved down at the ends a little more, and I like this feel better. Also, this setup feels more solid and looks better.
So, my recommendation is 18" x 1 1/4" apes with +6" hoses and cables. You will need to lengthen the wiring by 6" also.
Paul

Apes versus risers..who has installed?

Thanks for all of the info Paul..Im sure it will peek someone elses curiosity also..Not sure if im wanting to go thru the headache of adding to the wires, and redoing cables, so may try to fit 14" Apes and see how it feels..I like the look of the 18", and would love to go that route, as I think it would suit my needs for the better looks moreso, but its just all of that extra work..Guess if I buy my buddy a 12 pack, he would do the rerouting and solder the wires for me..I will post picks after its done with either the 14" or 18"..Hoping to have the new setup done within 3 weeks.
