Question Nomad 1700 - Pulling a Trailer.

Anyone pull trailers with their 1700 Nomads? Im semi intrested in getting once, wanted to know if it had any long term effects on the bike, I Love my Nomad in everyway, But you gotta admit it doesnt have the highest Low end torque of some bikes, Wanted to know how she did pulling a loaded trailer and 2 up rider ect? Any excessive wear on the bike, or go thru rear tires like crazy? My buddy has one on his Goldwing and it is worth its weight in gold when traveling out of state. Would love to see the types of trailers and hitches everyones using too!

I don't tow as often as some but have probably towed 1to 2000 miles of the 18000 on the bike. No issues in handling except the use of 6th gear is limited to long down hill runs or totally flat terrain. My total weight of trailer is probably 400 maybe 450 lbs. Tire wear hasn't been a factor since I don't tow often but rear tire was toast at 5000 miles, put a car tire on it at that time and put 13000 miles on it so far. Power is more than sufficient as well as the brakes (add a few feet to your following distance). Go for it , you will enjoy.

Were you running the Stock OEM Tires when they gave out at 5000? If so that doesnt worry me then, i know they are junk, Mine gave out at 7500 with no trailer. Im running Metzler now hoping they do better, Where did you find a hitch receiver for your bike? I know chuckster makes one i believe, but havent seen very many other (Though i havent been looking hard yet)

Yes the tire was oem. May could have gotten 1000 more miles but had a trip coming up so I changed it so I wouldn't be worried during the trip. Can't tell you what brand hitch I have as the dealer ordered it and installed it as part of the purchase price of the bike. The hitch does mount under the fender and has the removable ball and thingy the ball is attached to, that makes the hitch invisible when removed.

Nomad 1700 - Pulling a trailer

Hitch Doc makes a great hitch for the Vulcan line. I had one on my 1600 Nomad and now have one on my 1700 Voyager. Good solid hitch, well made and well worth the money. It is a hidden hitch so if you are not using it you can take the ball off and no one will know you have a hitch on.

I am not sure what type of trailer you want but go to this site if you want a tent trailer that sets up in less than 20 seconds. Yes sir 20 seconds it is amazing. I have pulled a trailer for years and found no further tire wear. What you need to watch out for more than tires is all your brakes check the wear on the pads very often as the trailer is pushing you a bit when you are breaking.

I pulled a 175# aluminum trailer with my 1600 Nomad about 25,000 miles of the 37,500 I had on it when I traded it. I had no torque issue. Only problem was the rear MC tire would only last for about 6,000 miles. For that reason I put a car tire for the rear which had 18,000 miles on it and at least another 3,000 miles of life left on it when I traded. I figure the trailer weighed in at 300 pounds loaded with my wife's wardrobe. Good luck.

I'd like to get a Leesurelite someday... I've seen one in person in action. Sets up and takes down in less than a minute! Unfortunately they don't give them away and finding a used one is next to impossible.

A Super 8 motel is the closest thing to camping that I'll do

No they do not give the leesurelite away but it is amazing trailer no one else even comes close to what it can do. The quality is way up there also as I have been to the factory where it is made. Also I know there is a debate if you should have a swivel coupler should be used. Experience it is a fact get one for the few dollars. I was heading down a highway and all of a sudden there was a railroad tie on road. I made it around the tie but the trailer did not and in my rear view mirror I saw it about 5 feet up in the air and it had rotated allot to one side. If I had not had the coupler I am sure I would have went down as the trailer would have pulled me to one side by pressure on the toungue. The wheel was bent and useless on the trailer after but that is it nothing else hurt. Also if bike ever falls over will not twist anything. What is a hundred bucks today nothing save yourself and your bike.
