Tire Position

Why can you not put a tire marked for a rear position, in the front position. For instance, Dunlop has a 150/80 16 in their D401 line, but it is marked for the rear. The front tire they match with has the same tread pattern. Other than the size, what is different?

I'll refer you to a discussion we had last week on the topic.

The tread is in reverse pattern for front and rear. All you have to do is reverse the direction of the tire. There is an arrow on the tire for direction of travel, just put it on in reverse so it is running backwards.

A rear tire on the front will usually last a lot longer, because the tread is thicker. Never tried it myself, don't know if it affects ride quality at all.

I know of a couple of people who have done this. However, they went with a narrower tire on the front with a CT on the rear. They both really liked the handling.

Thanks guys. I ended up purchasing a Dunlop D404(Front), but I will keep this in mind when it wears out.

I've heard of several people running rear tires on the front, and both are C/T on different bikes. Some reverse the arrows , some don't

I never heard bad things about doing this, only they liked it, and were happy with the ride

I just ordered a dunlope 404 rear and I will put it on reversed like Mas tequilla has done. It sounds like after reading about this subject it is a pretty good idea and many people do this and are happy with the results,

I don't understand the need for the tread reversal? Both tires rotate in the same direction in either position. Why would you reverse them. In theory, if you had a tread that expelled water out the side, by reversing, it would draw water in.....

The tread patterns are reversed on bikes. Reasons -- Front is positioned for maximum braking power and the rear is positioned for maximum grip on acceleration.
