Distant Battle; an excerpt

As darkness fell, the evidence of conflict in the distance was displayed across the sky. The flashes of distant explosions lit up the clouds with brilliant displays of power unleashed upon the earth below.
Again and again the skies were rent in silence. An eerie silence. A silence of impending doom. A doom that only the eyes could foresee as the days defense collapses and the front looms ominous in its inexorable advance.
My mind takes me back to scenes of scud missile attacks in the Middle East, thinking how close will it come and how defenseless I am from this attack from the sky.....
My ears strain for the sound that must match the sight. It seems surreal until the faint rumblings of the raging battle finally reach my ears and I know the tide now flows in my direction and I'm helpless before it, minuscule in the scope of the engagement as the very air is torn apart and the night shattered and the dogs were unleashed and the dust was turned to.... nothing more than damp dust as the storm blew itself out, leaving little to show for all the energy expended.
