possible nomad purchase

Hi all new to the forum. I have at the moment a honda cbr 600. First bike got it in a trade for a jeep. Well i really like the bike around town but i just got back from and overniter that was about 4hours one direction. It sorta hurt buy the time i got home the next day. So anyway at a local dealership they have a 1999 nomad for sale. Its in decent shape. The one bag has a pretty good scratch in her but other than that it looks pretty good. THe only thing that bothers me is that it has 29k on it. I was just wondering how these bikes hold up with some miles on them. Also i was wondering if you think a newer rider can handle a larger bike like this too. My gf has a 02 shadow 750 thats a blast to ride around on and i have no problems with riding that. I really like to know what you guys think. THanks

29K is nothing on a Nomad. I've heard of many going over 100K and even one over 200K

My first ever bike was a 2007 Nomad which I still have in one piece. You'll adjust to it in a short while. Oh, welcome to the Nomad Nation from southern Louisiana.

You'll be fine on the Nomad. It's a great bike and LW is right, 29K is nothing on a Nomad. I have an 02 with 31K on it and is going strong. I'm pretty sure CoachA's 99 has more than that on it and his is kicking butt. You regret buying a Nomad.

hey guys thanks for all the replys. Im not completly sure what im gonna do at the moment. I rally do enjoy the speed of my cbr. At the same time i really enjoy the comfort of my gfs shadow. Its really fun when i jump on throttle of that little 750 with the V + H pipes on it. Sounds great for a such a little bike.

Nomads are not well known for speed and it is heavy. How many long rides you planning on doing? Sounds like you may want to just keep borrowing your girlfriends bike or buy one like it.

I consider my Nomad a sluggish cruiser compared to CBR. However, Nightmare has a turbo on his Nomad and he left me so bad I thought I was draggin an anchor. So you can speed a Nomad up if you want.

If you go with a Nomad, you have found the right website.

29K on a '99 is nothing, assuming its been well maintained. I've got 20K on an 08!!

I also try and take a cruise almost everyday when i get off work. Im just waiting for my girl to start riding she cant until the second week or so of august.

I pretty sure that the 99 has a plastic oil gear (POG), that can be an issue if it has not been changed. I'm sure that one of the guys with a 99 will chime in and tell you how to check.

Nomads are almost bullet proof bikes for the most part, the only thing about a 99 model is to ask if the plastic oil gear (pog) has been replaced by a dealer. There wasn't a recall on this problem but kawasaki will fix it when it fails. They all will fail at some point its just a matter of when. This was the only year they used a plastic gear and all other Nomads have the steel gear installed. There are some bikes out there with over 200,000 miles and many over 100,000 miles. The only other thing you may need before long is a clutch spring, they are another part that usually needs changing by about 40,000 miles but is only about $50.00 for the spring and gasket. Its an easy repair to do yourself. Check out Gadgets Fix It sight, it also has tons of usefull info.

Hi akaseman. Welcome to the forum.

I agree with others that 29 K is nothing for a Nomad. I jumped from a 500 "baby" Vulcan to the Nomad without any difficulty. For its size, the bike is nimble and easily ridden. Not a lot of acceleration though. The main reason I jumped to the Nomad was more comfort on trips and storage room since I like to ride to work.

No regrets here. Good luck.

Most has been mentioned above; especially the POG -- but you didn't mention price.

For a '99 the price should be fairly low -- especially if the scratch on the bag is substantial.

thats the bike for anyone who is curious. Its at a dealership so im sure the price is a bit high. They said they would do a straight trade for my 2002 cbr. My cbr is a little high(16.5k) in miles to but in good shape.

I have a 99 and would not hesitate to buy another. The POG is the only thing to be aware of. If it's been replaced, you're good to go. If not, perhaps that could be used as a bargaining chip to get the price down, then replace it yourself with a JOG for a couple hundred bucks.
Great bike!
