Just Part of the Ride ...

One of the many things I love about doing a long ride for days on end .... is by mid day or afternoon pulling over and finding a grassy spot under a tree for a 5 minute power nap. Just stretch out, don't even take off the helmet ... lay down and drift off. Just as I feel the deep sleep coming over me I snap myself upright into the sitting position. This totally revives me and makes me mentally alert for the rest of the day's ride. I have done this by the Superslab, in town squares (parks) on the top of mountains in Yellowstone, British Columbia, the BRP, by the ocean (both Atlantic and Pacific) rest areas and river banks. On the flat of the prairie, up in northern Ontario on the Canadian Shield and at the Continental Divide in Colorado. I have power napped in some of the greatest spots this land has to offer. The ride and many of the surrounding sights inspire great visions that take me to the brink of deep sleep ... But the urge to keep moving wakes me just before passing the brink ... It's a magnificent feeling. Refreshing in every aspect.

Wow, wish I could fall out and snap out that easy. Working 12 hr. shift for so many years has my sleep patterns screwed up.

Curious, as you are laying there next to your bike with your helmet on has anyone ever stoped to see if you were OK?

I can do power naps, too, but mine usually last about 30 minutes and I've never done one while riding. Used to do them during lunch while I was working.

Not me, If I nap even a little bit, I am a bear. My head hurts and I feel worse than before I started. I wish I could do it. If I go down it's for a couple hours.
Also around here I would probably be robbed.

It sounds nice, I could see myself sitting down for a 5 minute power nap and waking up several hours later, disoriented and my back aching. :(

What works for some may not work for others. Power naps don't work for me......makes me feel worse than I did before. I just make sure I get plenty of rest at night when I ride and travel.

7-8 hours sleep at night and I'm good to go for the day.

LOL! Curious too.

I'd try to sneak up on ya and put flowers across your chest.
My dad would be napping and we'd go get a bible and start reading over him.

Nice tip. I've done the power nap thing. Have to try this. Usually so drug out I have to pull over again soon. Been better off just sleeping and getting it over with. Heard something recently on a study that best results came from at least a 45 minute nap.

Falling out is not a problem, as a plant operator I can fall out almost at will. Falling back IN again is another matter. Were I to attempt the Emu power nap, the more likely scenario would be waking to the sounds of "Hey buddy are you ok?" after a lot more than power nap time had passed.

Hadn't slept much since junior high. Figured if I needed sleep, I would get it. Spend most nights just watching the clock. If I get a few hours a night, that's plenty. Never in my life have I used an alarm clock and I get up every week morning at 5:30. I think rest for me is as good as sleep for others. And forget naps. Jamie
