rear axle nut size

Getting ready to replace my tires and before I get into it I want to make sure I have everything. What is the size of the nut for the rear axle?
Any tips to make things easier?
Thanks, Bill

Not sure of the size, I used an adjustable as I did not have the right socket. When I put the wheel back in I installed the final drive into the wheel then lifted it all into place and put on the nuts for the final drive to the swingarm. You can install the wheel into place without doing that but you might have to deflate the tire to get it past the final drive. I installed a 180/70 Cobra.
I had my final drive off anyway as I was doing the driveline service.

If you have a motorcycle jack be careful to place it in the right spot. I took out my front wheel first. Be careful to chock up the front forks after the front wheel is out or the bike might tip forward when you remove all the weight of the rear wheel. If at all possible do one wheel at a time, in my opinion its safer that way.

I am not sure this is correct, as I don't pay that much attention. But I think 28mm or in inch 1 and 1/8th. Big hex's can swap from metric to SAE pretty easy.

It may be wise to go to the tech room and read up on swingarm service. Doing the tire is getting you to the 1/2 way point, and the long swingarm bolts are usually not greased well at the factory, and it's a real good idea to know how the U joint IS, and to grease all the splines. The rear hub splines too, plus the top rear shock bearings. NO joke the rear shocks have bearings!

I bought my 1/2" drive 27mm socket at either Sears or Autozone. Can't remember which.

So whats the easiest way with the axle? Find a nut and bolt or a big allen wrench?

2 different animals. The topic is on the rear axel, your topic appears to be on the ft axel. My way was to take a bolt with a 7/8" head and lock on 2 nuts with 7/8" flats and weld it as a allen. No welding is needed really, just jam these like a red blooded American Male and it won't come un-done. The real size is 22mm.

I appologize for my 1 mm error too, I haven't seen my bike in a long while since we get winter hard in northern NH. I still have ice and snow melting.

Then when a size socket/wrench doesn't fit I just grab the next one up, or down, and don't pay much attention.

I have never really bought a single of a tool when there is a set. At over 19mm/34" I make all my allens this way with nuts and bolts.

Thanks Macmac, I got the answer for the rear and thought I would throw a question in on the front. Did not want to start a new thread.

If I recall, it's a 22mm hex.

That's right Cj, 22 mm hex, which I remember making up with 2 nuts and a bolt to be 'The' tool. I stand a better chance to remember if I have to make something, over just grabbing wrenches.

It's a hellova lot cheaper to lock 2 nuts on a bolt for that size allen than it is to buy the tool mounted on a socket. 22mm is pretty close to 7/8th".

Friend of mine just bought a No-Mar Tire machine and wheel balancer. He also picked up the axle tool so I am in good shape. Can't wait to try my hand at changing tires. :)
