Close call this morning
On my way to work this morning at 5 am, I stopped at a local convenience store/deli that cooks great combination egg/bacon biscuits. I grabbed one and a 16 oz plastic bottle of milk and sat in the deli to enjoy my breakfast. I took a small bite of the biscuit before opening my bottle of milk and had a piece of bacon, I suppose, get hung up in my throat just behind my tounge. I couldn't cough or speak. I tried unscrewing the cap off of the plastic bottle of milk and squeezed it so hard that milk broke through the cap seal and ran down the bottle. It then started slipping in my hand and I couldn't open that bottle "to save my life". There were a couple of people in the deli that never recognized that I was choking. With just enough presence of mind and strength left, I grabbed a couple of napkins, while not being able to breathe and opened the bottle. I took a swig and dislodged the bacon or piece of biscuit and then began coughing like a dog with a squirrell tail caught in his throat. Then the others noticed I was choking and came to my aid. One commented that I was turning blue. After a few minutes of eating my biscuit and drinking my milk, I was on my way to work. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Really hate to hear that Mitch. I have been there. My brother-in-law saved me by grabbing me from behind and squeezing the sh*t out of me. Glad you were finally able to dislodge the piece of bacon.
Now on a lighter note. Did you even think of eating slower and chewing your food before swallowing. ![]()

That's scary-stuff Mitch... I lost my father when I was 14 when he choked to death on a piece of meat. That was before the Heimlich maneuver was known to exist.
Everyone tried everything they could to help; but it simply didn't work and we lost him. Not a good situation, and changed my life forever. You can bet I know how to perform the Heimlich on adults to babies. ;) Glad to hear it all worked-out. ;)

Its amazing how fast it can happen, we almost lost our son when he was a baby due to choking, and a fella at work was choking a couple years ago, and motioned for me to help him. Thank goodness for our first aid training there, it worked well for both of us.

That is frightening. About 15 years ago, I had to do the Heimlich maneuver, twice, on a 90 year old woman at a BBQ restaurant in Fort Worth. I think I heard some ribs crack on the second pull, but she was already turning blue. Fortunately that incident, and yours, turned out OK.

Glad you are OK.
My wife has that happen at least twice a month, and it is scary every time. It happened to me once, fortunately my oldest son was there and did the right thing.

Glad you had the presents of mind to use the napkins for grip.
It is very easy to panic in that situation. Been there and done that. Twice ::)

Thanks. It did scare the heck out of me. Being an emergency responder for many years with countless hours of first aid training, it never once crossed my mind to perform the Heimlich on myself. I was sitting on a bench with a solid back high enough to use as a thruster but never thought of it until I had left and was on my way. Panic was beginning to set in but fortunately I was able to clear the passage with the milk. Most times I grab one of those hamburger sized biscuits and eat it while I'm driving. Bad things happen quickly. My loving bride told a friend "I almost got rich this morning". That's cold. :(
