New exhaust install

Hi all just about to install my new v&h pipes, which way do the new gaskets go in? There is a flat edge and a pointed edge? which way ??? If you ask me pointed side to motor so they can crush around the pipes

What type of header gaskets did you get?, I don't think I've seen any as you describe. I looked at your post, and it doesn't say what year/size your bike is, but on the 1500 & 1600, the OEM gaskets are like round hollow aluminum tubes that get crushed to seal when you torque the headers down. Me (and a lot of other members) use the HD gaskets (part # 17048-98). They are round in shape, with flat sides, and flat top and bottom, and appear to look like they are made out of tightly packed steel wool.
But from an engineering point of view, I would think the pointed/tapered end would go toward the header to have a smoother exhaust flow.

Hey Cliff from a simple mind like mine I would say to have the pointed edge out so if you want to remove the pipes for any reason it would give you something to grasp. Just my thought from my simple mind.

I use the HD gaskets also but have seen the OEM gaskets. I hadn't noticed them being tapered either.

not so much tapered as 1 side is flat and the other side looks like it got the material sandwiched together make it "bubble" up

OK, I would think the flat side would go against the engine.

I've gotten HD gaskets that look like that.

I always put the taper out and never had an issue.
