Engine crankcase part?

When looking at the top of crankcase from the left side there is a small metal key shaped piece that sticks up with an oval slot and is held by a bolt. Do you know what this is and what is it's purpose? It looks kind of tacky to me.

Engine crankcase part?

Are you referring to this?

In the parts fiche, it's referred to as a plate.

13271: PLATE 2515567-001 $2.38

I have no clue what its purpose is.

It is a grounding strap. You hook the negative jumper cable to it if you have to jump the battery.

Since the negative post of the battery is buried, this is logical. But there's a 100 other places you could connect a battery cable.

My theory was it was used in the assembly process.

I'll undercut BD and offer mine for $124.95 (+ shipping).

It's called a skupperflong Post. When you jack the bike up you connect a strap there to keep it from falling over.

At least that's my story...and I'm sticking to it!

The lower portion of the plate is a retainer which keeps the cables as seen above from jumping around in the opening.

The slot in the upper part is a beer bottle opener. Ma Kaw is always looking out for us!

Yup. Nomadd is correct here. Read your owner's manual. It says so in there.

Personally, I think "beer bottle opener" is more romantic and adds to the mystique of our Nomads.

Jumper cable attachment point is just so mundane! ::)
