My new knob and new tool

It seems I can't leave things alone, so I thought I'd get a new knob for my air cleaner. I didn't want to have a bolt showing that holds it on so this is what I came up with. Its a combination of aluminum and brass accenting.

The trick part of it is how to install and remove it? So I had to make a tool for it. Its small and easily carried in the hard bag envolope. Of course I had to also inlay some brass to it too.

I think I'll leave it alone for a while..John

Very nice! Looks way better than the stainless nylock nut I'm using.

First of all, I'm glad this thread wasn't about reconstuctive surgery to your manhood. Secondly, damn! What a great finishing touch there. Really like the use of different metals. hope to get something interesting like that when I finish my air kit.

Ok, so how did you build up the knob? Is this a pressed fit to get brass and aluminum to be one piece?

You and your tricks are begining to get on my nerves too

On 2nd glance the tool seems to be the harder of the 2 pieces, since you made shoulders some how on the grip. How in the heck did you pull that stunt?

That is like making trunnions on a cannon, a real cannon. Or am I not seeing correctly and the stud parts are what have the shoulders, and so are simply cut well to fit the grip double T part, and tigged?

Looks sharp John. Simply amazing what you were able to do.

My knob hasn't changed in 63 years. Well actually it did change some but not since I was 17 or 18. I just give it a pill ever now and then.

That is one finely constructed knob & tool. I really like the look of dis-similar metals.
Maybe a few miniture ones that hold your licence plate on, and a couple on the grip ends would round out the look.

Mac...maybe I shouldn't give you the answers and let you have the bee buzzing in a can effect..lol..hmm..nope..can't do that to you. On the knob the base brass is seated. The pointed tip is actually a brass plug threaded into the aluminum then all is milled for the holes. Then a 40 degree taper is done. As for the tool, the shoulders are threaded and milled for the fit to the handle. The brass tips on the handle are brass bolts tapered to 30 degrees.

Well it was very clever to say the least! Very handsome. Not a little work either. This is the sort of thing long winter dreams are made of ain't it?

I can see it now.. The next knob will have a amethist installed. I got one of them in a moose antler grip, on a dirk. There is a bit of silver under the stone to throw back light. It appears as nothing holds the stone in, but not even I can get that stone back out, with out breaking something.

And i thought that was clever. I think ya got me beat this time.
