Any ideas how much to fix/replace a Nomad trans?

Been looking a while now for a used Nomad and one just popped up for a great price, but they seller says it needs a new/rebuilt transmission. They're claiming their shop quoted $3000. That sounds kind of pricy to me for a motorcycle. Any ideas about what it would cost? ...or is this one I just steer clear of?

It could be very expensive. There are lots of Nomads out there that don't need a new transmission. Keep shopping.

That price is about right.

If it has a trans problem keep looking.

I have a 1600 eng in the warehouse with a bad trans.

You don't mention the year or the the asking price. If it was a really low price and you could could find an accidented donor bike for cheap it might be worth it, but you really need to do the math in my opinion.

Something to remember about this trans is that it is internal to the engine. You must split the cases to get to it.

So you're not just talking about the trans, but a complete engine rebuild also.

If you want to buy this bike, find the trade-in value and the retail value. Use the figure between them and subtract all repair costs. PAY NO MORE THEN THAT!
Has it been sitting a long time? Check the hoses, it might need new seals. Depends.
Does it need tires?
Wrangle for a decent price or move on.

That sucks. Do you know if Harley's and Victory's are the same way? I take these things into consideration when buying the next bike. Not that I plan on having transmission problems, but if one could be repaired without splitting the engine, it would be preferable.

Harley trannies are separate from the crank case, and I'm pretty sure Victory uses the same set up as harley.

There are indeed plenty of Nomads for sale that are in great condition. Unless you want a fixxer-upper I would pass.

Plenty is a relative thing if you've got the funds. There also seems to be a surprising lack of them here on the West Coast. Not sure why that is. Regardless, I think I'm going to pass on this one.

There are a wide variety of aftermarket transmissions available for Harleys. It's relatively easy to change one out compared to bikes with integrated transmissions inside the engine assembly.

You'll find it way easier to find a harley with a blown tranny than a Nomad.... I'd keep looking! ;)

That's not difficult to imagine since 100 Harleys are probably sold for every 1 Nomad.

That's not difficult to imagine since 100 Harleys are probably sold for every 1 Nomad.

For every Kawi street legal bike, possibly. But for every motorcycle, I don't think so.

I recently read and interesting article that claimed that Honda was actually the top seller of two wheeled machines, but when it comes to full fledged, street legal bikes, Harley obviously is the top seller.
