Air Cleaner filter reminder......

Now that we're getting toward the close of winter and before everyone heads out for the road......check your air cleaner filter.

I put a new K&N filter in about 10,000 miles ago and did a routine check on it tonight.

It was beyond filthy and needed cleaning badly. So, I'll get some K&N cleaner spray and oil tomorrow, but it made me think that other filters may be in the same shape.

If you haven't checked your air cleaner filter in some time...do so now. It might be dirtier than you think.

Yep did mine in October. K&N recharge kit (cleaner and oil) is less than 10 bucks at Pep Boys.

I checked mine soon after puchasing it used. Found a mouse nest. Now I check it monthly. The little creatures love warm beds this time of year.

Air Cleaner filter reminder......

I do a spring bike check around the first of March. It takes about 2 to 3 hours for each bike. First I give it a good hand bath looking for grease and oil deposits anywhere on the bike. I remove the K & N filter, clean it and put out to dry. While it is drying I grab the sockets and wrenchs and go over the bike from tip to tail checking for loose bolts and hardware. I give the grease zirk on the swing arm 1 pump of grease. By the time this is done usually the filter is ready for oil and to be reinstalled. I finish with tire tread measurements, air check in tires and shocks. Then I do a quick check of all lights, turn signals and horn. I usually try to work this in with an oil change. Finally I record all the maintenance I did for each bike in it's file in my computer.

I'll check everything on my bike also about early March, I do a very detailed cleaning, and check every nut and bolt looking for future problems. Everything gets oiled and lubed thats required,as well as removing both wheels and cleaning and checking for any signs of wear. Those K&N filters certainly do get filthy, I clean mine a couple times a season, although the directions on the bottle say that the filter is most effective after it has been used a while and not to clean it often. They recomend 50,000 to 100,000 miles which seems to be really stretching it under normal conditions. I seem to clean mine about every 5,000 and wash out tons of dust. Maybe since the filter is in an open enviroment, rather than in an enclosed housing it picks up more dirt.
