Oil Platform Explosion

Saw there was an oil platform explosion last night off the coast of Louisiana. Seven workers critically injured with more than a dozen missing.

I am sure the oil companies will find a way to increase the price of gas now. They are just like all big companies and don't care about the hurt or missing. Only the profits and loss.

If the news report is correct, this is a British Petroleum (BP/Amoco) TLP. I've never had the privilige to work for BP but have a couple of friends who do. This is the company that blocks entire hotels for their employees safe distances from the coast when a hurricane is approaching. Not many of the majors will do this. Prayers for those that were burnt and for those who may still be missing.

Even if the oil companies dont use it to raise prices, you know the lefties will use it to fight harder to outlaw oil.

it all works out the same, fill it up now $2.75 am you wont get nabbed for the $3.00 later, but since you filled up now you drove passed and missed the $3.00 level and next time you fill is $4.00........ you aint gonna win.

Update: This was a drilling platform belonging to TransOcean who was drilling for BP/Amoco in very deep waters. There are still 11 missing. The 2 BP drilling foremen on the platform were rescued. The Coast Guard will continue the search throughout the night. Sure hope they were able to get off of the platform in time. If not, this will likely have a very tragic ending.

Mitch, it doesn't sound good for the ones missing. I sure hope everything turns out alright for those people. I know it is hard and dangerous work.

I saw today that the oil platform continued to burn and collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico.

I also read that the family of one of the missing workers filed a negligence suit against the company YESTERDAY.

Yes, Scott I read where it had sunk. Don't know how those things work and whether anyone was below when it sank. Sure is a tragedy.

From the first day I figured it was a "blowout". For any here that aren't familiar with the term, a blowout takes place when a pocket of high pressure gas is penetrated and the drilling mud is not heavy enough to hold it down. That's only one of the scenarios. A spokesperson for TransOcean was quoted as saying everything was normal then the blowout occured with no warning. It may have happened so quickly that no one saw it coming. There are all sorts of alarms that will annunciate and warn the driller of an impending problem. No one will know what happened until the survivors start talking. The platform sank so much of the evidence is now at the floor. This could take years to sort out.
