Battery Tender

Hey Ya'll,

I got a question about Battery Tending.

How do ya'll hook yours up? Do you take your seat off each/every time, or can you get at the battery posts thru side cover?

I'd go out to garage but its raining buckets out there.....thanks in advance

I think most of them come with a pigtail that you connect once to the battery terminals, then route the other end out to where you can access it without having to remove the seat. Mine comes out behind the right side cover and I tuck it up under the seat when it isn't in use. You just plug the battery tender into that pigtail. I also made a jumper cable set that connects to that pigtail and has battery clamps of the other end in case I'm out someplace and have a dead battery.

DB, If its raining buckets in your garage I'd say the heck with the tender and fix the roof!

Oh, maybe your garage is detached, I bet that's it.

I think most people wire up a connector the stays exposed for the tender.

Same as CJ's wired directly to battery with pigtail tucked under the side of the seat above the right side cover.

The Shumaker has 2 set of leads. One set has gator clips and the other is hard wired to the battery. I fed mine forward and down with the rest of the hoses, and it ends just abouve the tranny. When riding I have a black plastic cap, you get in a muliti pack of colored caps at Auto Zone.

I access mine from the left side if the bike, just back and above the side stand.

Same setup as Mac here. Mine comes with a cap and is zip tied to the wires coming down, don't even notice it unless you know it is there.

Battery Tender

I have a cigarette lighter type power outlet attached to the inside of the windsheild. It's powered by the accessory plugs in the headlight bucket. Therefore it's always hot. I got a male plug from wally world and attached it to one of the pigtails that came with the battery tender. I just plug it into the power outlet when I park in the garage.

I got the Shumaker from Wallyworld and used it all winter.
Bike started up first crank two days ago, pigtail comes out by right side cover.

Battery Tender

Depends on what brand you buy, but the Deltran Battery Tender comes with a quick release cable that mounts permanently to the battery posts.

I ran mine along the frame tube toward the rear and tie wrapped it to the right saddlebag guard. The connector sits right below the top of the guard where it mounts to the frame - you couldn't find it unless you knew it was there. I can easily connect it from either side of the bike.

You can buy a 25' quick connect extension cable. I bought one for use as a jumper cable. Plug one end to the battery quick connect, and attach the other end to the battery clamps adapter that comes with the tender.

Almost forgot: I keep the battery on the Tender whenever it's in the garage. That practice should extend battery life using a "smart" tender. I had a '99 Suzuki 1500LC before the Nomad, and the charging system was marginal at best. Come back from a ride, park it, and a couple days later it wouldn't start. At first I thought it was the battery, but then I bought the Battery Tender and got in the habit of keeping it connected in the garage. Never had a problem starting again.
