Transmission Problem, part two
Remember me and my 1500 Nomad? I went to have an oil leak fixed with an independent mechanic. Oi leak is fixed. Rode off and couldn't shift anymore. You all were very helpful trying to figure out what the problem could have been.
I ended up buying an engine off of Ebay with 40 miles on it because the mech said that it would take too long and it's too risky to fix a tranny (too many leaks could occur blabla). Engine came. He called me. Now are you guys sitting? He said it has the same shifting problem. There is no such coincidence. And then he continued telling me that he took the old tranny apart just to find out.....are you guys SITTING? That there is nothing wrong with the old tranny. Now let me recapture. I have spend over a thousand bucks to replace a perfectly working engine. I do believe that he thinks that there is a shifting problem but I also believe it is because Nomads seem to shift a little harder than other bikes. Or do you guys have any knowledge if there is some locking mechanism in the engine that might prevent the shifting? Any take on the issue? Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Was it shifting fine before he fixed the oil leaks?

Does the mechanic know that the Nomad must be moving to shift? Except from 1st to neutral and back?

He had to have not gotten something put back in the right place. There are a lot of parts in there. Probably the only way to tell is have someone that knows the system for sure take it apart and see. Maybe since you have the other motor you could take the pictures in the factory manual and see if everything is in place or at least duplicate the problem. I dread the day I have to take mine apart but if it happens I will be the one doing the work. I always do my own mechanic work. Sometimes I have to scratch my head before I can figure it out. Good luck!

Sorry to hear this, Cougar. I think your problem is the guy turning the wrenches.

I think CJ is right. Get someone else to take a look at it.

Wow, I followed your story closely on your other thread. I had my doubts about your mechanic then and now I really have a problem calling him a mechanic at all.
If the new engine you bought has the same shifting symptoms as the one he said was bad then it has to be a characteristic of the Nomad engine. I would bet he has no idea the Nomad has to be MOVING to shift except from 1st to neutral and back to neutral like Bob said. Through that out there to your guy and see what he says.

I always felt it was the 'Safety Neutral Finder' just doing what it does.. Sometimes that can get you stuck in 2nd gear. if you happen to stop the bike in 2nd gear you simply must ride away again in 2nd gear.
I do this constantly myself. many times I have had to force my wife to wait a moment while i take off in 2nd gear get to a speed fast enough to get the shifter to work again and go back and get her. You can reach these speeds in a parking lot. The first time it happened I had no idea there was a safety neutral finder. That day I was in the middle of Ohio headed west from NH, and i thought the tranny was lunched too. Getting going in 2nd gear 2 up and pulling a trailer was a ordeal. Your tech was never in any reap ossition to frig that up, other than he may have left the bike in 2nd gear and you picked it up that way. Most certainly both of these events are showing NOTHING is wrong.. I wish I could see this mess first hand...

Yes, I told him about the Neutral Finder and he didn't know apparently.... I jsut found it in a thread on a different forum. He should have know that but didn't. Inexperience. He still is a good guy but probably the last time I had my bike there. What urks the hell out of me is that I bought a second engine while the first one was in perfectly fine working condition. It's not that I have a donkey pooping gold coins in the bathroom, if I may say so.
I just want my bike back. I have been without a motorcycle for eight weeks now and I am sick and tired of seeing all the riders on the street and I cannot be there. |

Like I stated in your previous post about "no shifting"
"I've been reading this thread since it began and it seems to me that the person working on it at the moment is not a true motorcycle mechanic and it's costing you more then it should have. I would go for a second opinion from another mechanic or from somebody that as done this on his nomad." Hope finally everything goes well |

C O U G A R, In what condition is the other, well the first engine in now?
Does this tech understand the neutral finder now? I sure hope so. That engine in pieces still has value. it is usually much harder for someone to build a engine back out of a basket too.
