AZ-specific exhaust/emissions question

I am planning to replace my stock exhaust ('07 Nomad) with an aftermarket product in the next couple of months. I am "fortunate" enough to live in the ONLY state in the US that requires motorcycle emissions tests (thanks Arizona! :-/). Having never had to take a bike through emissions testing before, I was wondering if not having the stock pipes (and goat belly) is going to be a hassle? Can anybody from AZ provide an answer? Thanks!

If you can find slip on mufflers you'll be able to keep the goat belly. Harley shops uaually have a bunch of take offs and they will fit or you can gut your stock mufflers. see gadget fix it page.
Arizona really does that???????

Thanks, but I don't want to keep the goat belly if I don't have to. I really don't think changing the pipes would be an issue, because just about every bike I see has aftermarket pipes here. I just want to make sure I'm not going to get fined or something.

My understanding to it cactus, you must have that cat converter on when the inspection is done since thats stock and to meet emissions. After that you could pull it all off and put on what you want till next yr and then put all the stock set-up back on. My 2cw

AZ-specific exhaust/emissions question

My uncle lives in Mesa and he had his stock mufflers removed and aftermarket put on when he bought his HD a year ago. He has not said anything about having problems getting it inspected. You can try and see what happens with the aftermarkets on and if you do not pass, then do what Doc suggests. My understanding on emission is that there will not be a problem unless you are running rich.

Whatever you do, Scott... keep the stockers. Stuff them up in the rafters in the garage if you have to, but keep it ALL just in case...

You should probably ask the AZ DMV if there's a visual, decible, and/or emissions requirements. Best to get the info from the horse's mouth that way you know how much flexibility you have to work with. Good luck and keep us posted...

Hi, in the Uk all our vehicles go through emission test and yes removing the cat will not get your nomad through the test, but as already posted on here keep your stock pipes and put em on for the test ;)

I believe it's just a simple sniffer test at idle speed. I don't think I will have to worry about it real soon because new vehicles are exempt from testing for 'x' number of years. They still charge a fee, you just don't have to have the inspection done. At any rate, I would hang on to the stock pipes.

I found this. I don't know if it will help you with your questions or not. Look under HARDSHIPS, EXEMPTIONS & INCENTIVES in the article for the emissions part.

Thank you. That was very informative, but not overly encouraging. I know our local ABATE chapter is working hard to exempt motorcycles from testing in AZ. I think I'm still going to buy the pipes, keep the OEMs and see what happens in 5 years when my bike will no longer fall under the new bike exemption. who knows, maybe I won't still be in AZ in 5 years. You never know.

I put aftermarket pipes on but will keep the stock ones. You never know where you might have to live someday. The stock pipes might take up a little space, but at least you don't have to feed them.

If he moves Doc then he would not be cactus any more. There needs to be a prickly one in every group. :)
