I'm going on a long trip this summer and I don't want to take a full or flip up helmet. What helmet have you had a good experience with, that would be adequate for rain situations, assuming I won't be traveling all day in a hard rain? (I'll just pull over in those cases).

I'm looking for the most minimal helmet. Something that would take a shield when I hit rain.

Just curious, why not wear the helmet you have now?
In the case you live in a state where no helmet is required and don't have a helmet now, why not a full face or flip up? On long trips you still need protection.
Sorry this no helmet, minimal helmet crap is one of my pet peeves.

I used the 3/4 helmet with a face shield for several years. By the time I finished my September vacation last year, I had swallowed enough rain and in a few cases it did get a bit chilly. Even in a light rain I had water on the inside of the shield, too. When I came home my first purchase was a full face. So far I have been happy with it.

Don't like the full or flip up helmets because I believe peripheral suffers. Been down doing 4 or 5 times through the years, all of the falls in NYC and all falls were in the 70's, but I have to say a full helmet saved my face once. :) :) :) (Though friends may say it doesn't matter my face was saved). I plan to stay out of the cities on the 6 week trip I'm planning and I don't ride a crotch rocket anymore.

I have to be honest, these days I ride suburban, urban roads and plan to ride two lane roads on my trip.

I don't like full-face helmets and wouldn't have one. I have one 3/4 helmet for colder weather, a couple of months a year. I don't always wear a helmet, but when I do, it's either my HJC Vulcan helmet or my Scorpion EXO100. The EXO100 is probably the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn. It has a retractable shield that slides up inside the helmet. I wear it on longer rides because it does offer some weather protection with the shield down.

This is my favorit helmet that I have. Its the Scorpion EXO 100. It has an eye visor that deploys and raises easily. Removable ear skirts that will hold spearkers. This is a 1/2 helmet but fits like a 3/4. You can chage the visor tint. You can also purchase a certain size exterior shell and a larger or smaller interior liner (liner is washable) for a more custom fit. All these nice features and I found it on ebay for about 100.00 shipped. Plus you look like the gunner in an Apache helicopter (thats a bonus). I get compliments from other riders that I ride with and some of them have purchased this exact helmet. It also comes in several other colors. I like it because it does not fit like a 1/2 helmet. There is no pull or rise out of it even at high speeds. After having so many different styles and fits, this has been the best helmet I have ever purchased for the money.

Another vote for the EXO 100. I bought this to compliment the Scorpio FF I have, and I've only worn the FF once since I bought this. Very comfortable on long rides, no lift or rise at high speeds, and the flip-down visor is great for night-riding. My only issue is the visor rubs on the left side a bit and has left a minor scuff on the visor. Otherwise, excellent helmet.

Heys guys:

I've noticed the exo 100 in my local dealer. I like the way the shield goes up and down especially when sunglasses aren't enough going into the sun.

How is the helmet in the rain? With the Nomad's windshield I would like to think ..not too bad.

I've always been a 1/2 helmet fan, but for this winter I
bougt a KBC FFR and like it real well. Easy to use over
glasses. Great for winter but come summer I'll be back
In my MR2 beanie.
Ride safe,
Dano

I've been using an HJC AC-3 helmet (3/4 coverage) for the past three years. It comes with a visor to block the sun and I keep a face shield in the saddlebags for rain. It only takes a minute to change out. So far it has worked well for me. When I replace it I intend to get another AC-3.

I have a 3/4 Bell and an HJC Vulcan 1/2 helmet. I prefer the Vulcan 1/2 over the Bell 3/4. I've never been caught in a heavy downpour though. One day it will happen and I'll look for a full face or something like the X100.

I wear full face G-MAX helmet all the time, every ride. Vision is not a problem. Protection is my main concern.
I understand in hot weather they are not as cool as a half or 3/4 or God forbid a beeny helmet but as I said I believe protection is the main reason to wear a helmet, not comfort.
In real hot weather I open the shield to the first click, approx. 1/4" and it circulates air through the inside of the helmet.

In reference to the EXO 100 - I rode last year coming back from our yearly trip to Elko, NV. On the way back we hit a HARD rainstorm. I had my windshield set on the lowest setting and the visor down. I was not wearing sunglasses (I don't very often with this helmet) but I was wishing I had. The water seemed to come right off the bottom edge of the visor and blow into my eyes. Only issue I've had with this helmet. Now I bring a pair of clear lenses on trips just in case of rain. I don't think this was solely the helmets issue since the windshield was on the lowest setting. I have ridden in the rain several times and it does not happen unless it is really coming down.
