Replacing grips...suggestions?

I ordered a set of Kuryakyn Iso Grips from Phat Performance Parts on Tuesday and they arrived yesterday (excellent service). I plan to install them tomorrow.

Does anyone have any suggestions on removing the stock grips? I've never replaced grips before and want the least hassle possible. I know the right grip should be no problem. I've read that the chrome ends on the grips are left-hand threads. I've tried turning them and they don't seem to want to turn.

What's the best practice for replacing grips?

My ISO grips had the throttle sleeve in the throttle grip. Just loosen both of your throttle cables (all the way) with the slack adjusters near the grip, remove your right switch housing and un-hook the cables, swap out, and re-assemble. The left grip is the one that the end cap has LH threads. It is glued on in the threads. I would suggest a pair of channel-locks (with padding if you don't want to mar the finish) to twist the end off. Then grip the grip firmly (with hands) and twist back & forth until the grip starts to twist and breaks the glue, then slide it off.

You are going to really like those grips, especially if you have big hands.

YOU will LOVE the grips :) Fairly easy for me,,I had a BUD do it LOL..... TO remove the Left Glued on one,, CUT a wire coat hanger or use a small straight metal rod... poke ik around the grip to break up the glue,,,,Shoot some WD 40 in and it will soften the glue if it give problems.........Rich

CJ...I did what VulcanE did and it worked out great. I have the Kury Flame Grips and love them... I've also got the large throttle boss...and that helps make things more comfortable. The throttle side was easy...the glued side, I used a large set of channel locks and a wrag and just twisted... once the glue seal was broken, it slid off with ease!!! With all the other stuff you've done, this will be like opening a can of beer!!! ;o)

just make sure you clean all the old glue off before installing the new grip, I personally like to clean the glued side and then rough it up GENTLY with a mild sandpaper or emery cloth and apply a small amount of either grip glue or jb-weld, VERY small amount if using jb. Just enough to prevent it from turning.

JussMatt made me wonder though, is there more than one size for the throttle boss?

And I would suggest you do not use the Kury glue. Almost anything else (Gorilla glue) would hold better.

Also, you might want to put a heavy coating of white lube on the throttle bar before install. Just makes the throttle a little smoother.

Now you tell me.

The Kury glue was dried up in the little bottle, so I ran over to ACE and bought some Gorilla Glue. The glue holding the stock grip was only on about the last !" of the bar end. Took all of 5 minutes to remove.

Glad to hear a report on the flame grips. I have the Kury's on the Nomad already. Absolutely love them. But I was wanting to replace the grips on the Sabre. Looking hard at the flames as it goes with the Honda's theme. You've made up my mind. Thanks for the report.

As you know, I do a little R&D for Kuryakyn. We have had many conversations on their choice of glue. Don't know why they don't change it. It certainly has been discussed.....and documented that it ain't worth s__!

Did you lube the throttle bar? If not, still can be easily done. It does make a difference.

The best way to get the chromed caps off is by using the rubber from the left hand grip like a jar opener. cut it off the bar with a stanley knife and put it over the chromed plastic end and twist. It will give you the grip you need to break the glue bond and at the same time won't mar the ends so you can use them for engine bolt covers. I just replaced mine and that method worked well. That is of course if you are planning on never using the stockers again

I ended up having to use channellocks on the left grip cap. I'm a fairly big guy and couldn't budge it by hand. It was super-glued on.

I bought my grips and throttle boss off of ebay. I had my local supply shop price it out and I saved $25 by going through ebay. There is a regular Kury Throttle Boss & then there's a Large One....that's about 1/2" longer. Works great!!!!
