Cold idle --- Help

Looking for ideas on how to get the engine to run in high idle mode longer when it is first started cold.
The engine when first started will idle fast for about 10 seconds maybe and then drop right down to a lugging slow idle, once it warms up just a bit it is fine and idles great not low at all. I know there is the high idle/ (choke cable) on the side, but really didn't know whay at all that was there anyway as the bike is fuel injected. 2001 Nomad FI
Have done the sea foam treatment too.

Thanks

Thanks!! But that wasn't the answer I'm looking for.

I don't know if it might be a sensor (temp) or something on the throttle body that needs adjustment. It use to idle for like 30 / 45 seconds before coming down off high idle.

I understand now. I also did the caddman mod and that affected the idle on my bike. I remember that my bike use to idle faster at first and then slow down and I never needed to use the fast idle. Sorry, can't really help.

Chuckster, have you removed the Idle Control Solenoids? If so, the computer really can't control the cold idle anymore. I took mine off, because I couldn't stand the noisy things. Also they screw up the smoothness of airflow to the throttles at speed.

Living in California it's really not a biggie for me. The bike warms up fast & I have a vista cruise if I have to let go of the throttle I kick it on. (I could use the knob, but it's too far away compared to the Vista Cruise.)

By two miles from home the bike is usually warm enough to idle OK.

I left all the brackets and wires so I can just slip the solenoids back in during the winter if I want to, but in five years, so far I haven't wanted to.

Even with the Seafoam treatments, a good scrubbing of the throttle body with a can of carb cleaner can do wonders for the idle process. if you havn't done this, you may be surprised by the results.

Well I think that might have help it out. I used cyclo carb spray, did use quite a bit and let it sit for a while and then fired it up. Lots of carbon/ black gunk out the pipes. When I went out and rode it , found it to be more responsive and the idle well had to turn it down from where it was prior. Will know tomorrow morning as it will be cooled off. Will see how it reacts then...

the fast idle Chuck is designed to only idle fast for 5-10 sec then drop down to whatever you have your warm idle speed, 950 rpm i think is spec's. I have mine at about 650-750 rpm and it does fine even cold.

I think you got it licked chuckster, I clean mine with an old toothbrush every 6-8 weeks and it makes a difference. It really helps with the gas mileage also. I have been getting 200 miles to the tank all season so far, but that is running the tank down rather low.

I do have the caddmann kit, and mine idles low when I first start it. I did remove the solenoids, so I just go a head and use the choke for a about 5 min then shut the choke off. It ususally runs pretty good then.

Just don't call it the choke in front of anybody that knows FI. They'll think you're...ummm...less knowledgable that you would otherwise appear.

(How's that for diplomacy? ;) )

It's really the fast idle knob, and all it does is crack the throttles open a tad.

Ahhh...the technical terms. The fast idle knob it is then. Speaking of diplomacy, you might run for Governor.......of the Nomad Nation

This might be a question for its own thread.....or for the guru CQ, but I'm told that idle set in the 650-750 range isn't getting enough oil to the upper engine.

Anybody have any knowledge or comments to share on this?

I see what you mean Caddmann, I see in the VROC forum, what you're talking about. Fast Idle Adjuster, Fast Idle Knob, etc.......
