rear final drive
okay guys,
i am getting ready to change my final drive oil. i have recently replaced the pinion seal. do i fill it while on the kickstand or ?with a 2 inch block under the kickstand? i know that i will not fill it as the manual recommends as this is what ruined the seal to begin with. thank you in advance for the advice. oh by the way it is a 2005 with 30,000miles on it. A two inch block should be fine. I use a 4 ince block and it puts the bike kind of close to tipping but still slightly angled.

The goal here is to not just fill it to the lip right? we just need to put the rquired 6 oz. ?
I woould like to change mine soon to. I know someopeople say they change that every time they change the oil. I find that excessive. Is that any where near neccesary? What oil? Can I use the same 20w50 full synth.? |

I filled mine while in a wheel chock that made it sit level, and now I have gear oil leaking around the rubber boot by the driveshaft. It's never leaked before as i filled it while on the sidestand. I guess I need to fill it on the sidestand, eh?

You need to check it frequently, so I do that whenever I change the engine oil; and since it's a pain just to check it, and when I'm changing the oil, my drain pan is already dirty (and so am I) I just always change it. That dang rear drive unit costs over $2000 if you toast it. A one-quart bottle of oil fills it over 5 times, and so using the best quality oil it still only costs $2 to change it. That's cheap, buddy. Real cheap insurance. |
