Another question, steering/ all balls install.

Hi every one, thanks for all the help on this. I got my bike together but, I could not figure out how to get the stock seal out of the steering stem nut. When I look at a diagram it shows the steering steam nut # 92015B & the seal # 92049A as 2 separate parts. But it looked to me like a 1 piece unit. How do I get the stock seal out so I can put the All Balls seal in its place?

We just covered that, DL and Peg had solutions. Let me look for it for you.

This is a bit different, the seal I'm dealing with now appears to be part of the nut you need to tighten to 44 lbs. then back off & retighten to 22 lbs. In diagrams it looks like the part the seal is in & the nut are separate pieces but in the hand it looks like one part to me. I thought about digging the stock seal out with a screwdriver, but don't want to take the chance till I've talked with some one who knows the trick to getting that seal out. I put my bike together for now so I can ride, but this is going to bother me.

They should be 2 different pieces and I don't think they should be stuck together like that unless maybe they were torqued down way to hard or maybe there was no grease left in there for a very long time.

Is it possible that someone working on the bike before you bought it left that seal off? If you were having problems, especially if the bearings you took out were in bad shape, that could explain why (besides the OEM bearings being crap in the first place, that is).

Bought the bike new, almost 30000 miles on it now . The stock bearings were good, just decided to upgrade. My brother gave me a hand. He is a retired machine repair man & couldn't figure that part out either.

Make sure you follow PEGs advice, In past posts on this and replace the seals. At one point he thought the stock seals would work better because of the fitment but found he had to redo the job later. ( yes, I remember Peg)

Interesting on the torque of the new bearings. I would like to know. I have the All balls installed and I can not figure out how to torque them without the old Harley method. ( on the flop of the frontend off the ground). My Issue is I have a socket 1/2"drive to tighten the stem bearings but the torque is different due to the lack of the angle of the Spanner wrench.

I have 1000 miles on the All balls installed by the Kawasaki shop and I think they need to be tightened / reset. I feel a slight thunk under braking in the handle bars. But could that be my brake pads shifting? Putting it up on the blocks this weekend to check. But I really do not know how to check it. I understand the slop and play in the forks as you move it front to back and the turning Flop of the wheel thing ( a Harley way). I just do not want to ever have to deal with this again for some time.

Mike,

I got this when I did my steering bearings last fall. Worked great. Allowed me to torque accurately
