Idle adjuster question

Hi All,
Have a couple of items I have questions about:
1) the idle adjuster knob. Mine is difficult to turn. It's turned almost completely clockwise and won't go any more. If I want to adjust my idle again, it's almost impossible.
2) the fast idle knob (choke). I pull mine all the way for the first start of the day. Starts good, but the knob has to be completely out for the fast idle to kick in. I push it in a little before i start riding to bring the idle down. It just seems that this knob has to go a long way for such a small adjustment.

Are these items acting normally?

Thanks, Mark...

Idle adjuster question

My idle adjuster knob was also turned all the way clockwise and will not turn up any more.
I am the one that turned it that way thinking that the idle was set too low from the Dealer when I first got it. I turned it back to where it was and am not having any trouble with starting,,idleing,, or vibration while idling. But ...yeah..I cannot turn it up much more because it just will not go.
As far as the choke/fast idle knob....The way mine works is either pulled all the way out or all the way in....like nothing really happens in between.

Wheather right or wrong....that's the way mine does.

Doug

Idle adjuster question

Where you located nighthawk? Only reason why I ask is I'm in the Houston, TX area... REFUGIO is lower down the coast than I am... but I don't have to pull out my choke for starting in the morning. Wasn't sure if it was a temperature thing or not. I have my idle adjusted about 1-1 1/2 turns clockwise from dealer installation and haven't had any real issues. I've got an 07 and just turned 10K on her. Do y'all HAVE to pull the choke for it to start from cold???

Idle adjuster question

I'm in Florida. I've got the idle adjustment as far clockwise as it'll go. I only use the "choke" knob first thing in the morning. After she warms up I have no issues.

sounds like #1 is not quite normal: you should be able to slide black plastic slleve back toward motor and then you can turn idle set knob left or right as many times as needed.
#2 is normal, it all or none. You shouldn't need the choke unless real cold.

Idle adjuster question

Glad to see this post. With my 07, I havent had much luck adjusting the idle speed either. Works for a little while, then seems there is a throttle positioning switch or computer that may be over riding my efforts. I rarely pull out the choke. Mine idles awful slow.

Idle adjuster question

Mine started idling so slow that when I went to pull in my clutch the bike would shut off after running at high speeds. I also had a jerking in the throttle at slow speeds when I would give it a little gas. We adjusted the idle up to what Todds bike was idling at and on the ride home, no more problems.

What Doc said about the idle. You have to push it in or move the black plastic sleeve to turn it. Mine idles at 950 to 1000. I never touch the "choke" knob. I just start the bike, if it is cold it will immediately stall and I start it again and it runs from then on.

Idle adjuster question

The idle cable seizes a bit at the linkage on the throttle body, I lubricate mine regularlly to keep it functional. It seems to be a normal occurance on our bikes. Give it a squirt of WD40 or simalar every couple months and it will be fine.

Do I need to remove the tank to get to the linkage? I haven't done that before.

You should go ahead and pull it off so you can check all your hose clamps and things . After the first time, you'll be able to get it off in 15 min or less . When mine had the stock air induction, I never had to use the "choke" (witch is just a fast idle cam, not a choke, unless you have a carbed bike) no mater what the temp was, and I ride year round. After removing the stock intake system, along with the "cold idle solenoids", the first time I start-up for the day, I have to pull the choke out, and it's either all out or in, nothing in between, after it starts and runs about 10 seconds, I push it in, and it idles a little slow, but as it warms up the idle comes up to normal. To adjust the idle, you have to push the cog that you turn "up" to make an adjustment, then pull it down so it will stay. The book says idle should be 900 RPM's +/- 50

Idle adjuster question

1st take it out...then let it hang down, pull out the knob all the way and then twist. Oh wait that's how I go to the bathroom!

Actually my idle knob is hard to turn unless I take it out of the cradle and let it hang down. Also twist the throttle a little to take the bind off it. Probably a little WD40 or other non-greasy lube would help.

I have found that if your bike is idling slower than it used to, its usually time to spray out the throttle body with carb cleaner. Most times this will restore the idle and fuel mileage as well.
