Heading out to San Franciso

I will be in San Francisco @ a conference over the next week. I will be located downtown with no access to wheels. Are there any interesting places worth visiting within a walking distance or accessible by public transit? I'd like to do Alcatraz but from what I've heard tickets are really hard to come by and reservations are made months in advance.

Thanks

Yeah and next month isn't looking any less busy either. So much for a calm summer.

Plenty of Museums, the Chocolate Factory, Pier 39, might as well get more refined. Been to the Grotto at pier 39 several times in the past and was excellent, sit upstairs by the windows. However I see the reviews are 3 stars now. Lombard Street is the most crookedest street in America is there. No sense in just sitting in a hotel room.

You could catch a Giants game if they're at home. North Beach is a pretty cool area, near the Wharf with lots of good Italian places. There's always Chinatown.

. . . and don't forget to ride a trolley. Also, if you do stand outside at the back. It's allot better that sitting and looking through windows.
