what is the best way to get more hp out of the engine on the 2007 1600 nomad reasonably

Probably a big air kit and a programmable engine control module. CaddmannQ could answer this because I believe he has thus tweaked his motor.

There's a lot of ways to go about this depending on your level of mechanical skill and your financial situation. They will, of course, all make your bike "illegal."

Anyhow, you can get about another 10 to 12 HP without tearing the engine apart. This would mean a bike that's a bit quicker in town, has more passing power, sounds better, but not much more than 110 MPH top speed. All you need is a low restriction exhaust and intake system. You'll also need to tweak the wiring to the computer or add an aftermarket fuel control module.

Depending on whether you mod everything yourself, or buy all aftermarket stuff and pay someone to install and tune it all, you can spend between $60 and $1500 or more.

I modded my intake and bought an aftermarket exhaust and a less expensive contol module, installed it all myself, and spent about $600. I could have spent another $1000 and maybe got another 2 or 3 HP by buying a better intake and a better module, and paying somebody to wring the living hell out of my bike on a dynomometer. that wasn't for me.

Now if you want to add a lot of horsepower, the price rises quickly to the $6000 range for real engine mods and a turbo kit plus professional installation. This means about another 50 HP and a top speed around 140 to 150 MPH. It also means more maintenance, more heat, and reduced engine life.

I can confirm the mods Cadd did, as he did it to my 1500 Nad himself. Instantly I had more power in a very useable way.

He also changed both tires to the 1500, and the rear was one size larger. He also switch the bike to all syn oil including the rear end gear.

I bought that bike in Spring 05 as stock less visual mods only. I rode that bike that way with my wife to Cadds house in Cal from my house in NH towing a trailer behind the bike.

On my way west I got on average 36/38 MPG's. When I left Cal for Fla, it got 44/46 MPG's which was more than a welcome surprise.

I duplicated these mods myself on my 1600 Nomad, and got the same results.

Not everyone does, but I don't know why..

Recently I made the Caddman kit right side only, and have just installed a new rear tire of 195/60 R 16, and the jury is out on MPG's.

The jury is out on what that rear tire can do as well in terms of power. It is brand spankin new and I am of a mind to break it in easy for a bit. So no hole shots untill I see how it is..

Mac, did you put Baggers on the 1600 yet? Or gut the pipes?

V&H baggers last summer, when I did the TFI modual, and your CaddMan Kit (Both sides) All the little hoses are in a box, as are the twin solenoids. I found a bright blue wine bottle cork that fit the hole for one of the hoses.. LOL

Recently I removed the left side for nakedness, and found I could cut the crossover tube apx 5/8" / 3/4" from the ears on the left and sort of push it hard OUT the right. I believe I could stuff it back in and 'fix' it, if I ever wanted too.

Unlike the 1500 the 1600's fuel pump isn't flush to the bottom of the tank, and so one day will mist it flat black. Currently it is that odd orange green motor cases are, and pretty ugly, so I will hide it in paint.

If the shot was any more straight up, you could see the fuel pump bodywell, but just a little of it shows centered above the cly's.

MAC You said you put a 195 60 16 on your 1600 is that a car tire? That is a huge jump from the stock 170. Is it a radial or bias? Do you have pleanty of clearance????? And what kind of tire brand model???

spirello, Yup that is a Dunlop SP Sport 5000 Sy 195/60 R 16 and so radial. I have all kinds of clearance. Altered nothing and can with ease slip my little finger by the drive shaft tube.

It is now too late for me, but since I did this I hear I could have gone to a Goodyear unidirectional design in 205/60 R 16.... Now that's gotta be IT! There can't be much clearance.

I might try that in uh oh 20,000 miles... and yes this is a 1600 Nomad... This won't come close to working on the 1500's Nomads.

who said a stock bike would only go 110?I look to have a good 75-100 pounds on you and have had mine at 115 on a flat, and 125 down a long hill.


as a side note. when I first wrote this I was not thinking about true speed. I do mean Nad speed.

I did the Cadman dual air intake mod + the PCIII with the V&H Bagger dual exhaust. I now have 67hp and 85 ft.lbs. of torque with the Thunder map in the PCIII. The only other way to increase hp, torque and overall speed (short of the $6K mentioned by Cadman) is to get the cam kit from Thunder Manufacturing.

That kit requires a bore job too, and is part of the "internal" engine mods" I mentioned.
