No start after battery change

I found my battery dead after the rotten winter we had. I jump started it and left it running for half an hour. Shut it down and tied to restart it but no dice. Wouldn't crank at all just tick tick tick. No big deal. Ordered a battery and had it shipped to the front door. Installed the new battery today. Bike cranks and cranks like a champ but won't fire. Sprayed a little starting fluid in the throttle body and it fires then dies right out. I suspect it's not getting fuel? I red the diagnostic steps in section 3-22 of the manual but I don't quite understand the process. Maybe my feeble brain is clouded by frustration or maybe I'm just slow. In either case I could use some help. Any ideas?

Did you put the new battery on a charger and make sure that it was fully charged?

It sounds to me like it's not fully charged. The starter motor could be drawing the voltage below that where the injectors have enough voltage to operate.

I thought of that but I had the jumper box connected to the battery while I tried to start it. I assumed that the battery and the jumper box combined would have enough juice to fire the injectors. ?

If you have a voltmeter, hook it to the battery and see what the voltage drops to while cranking. If it drops below 10 volts, the new battery may need charging.

What are you using for a jumper box?

I checked all the fuses in the fuse box they are good. Even put the side stand up and down a few times and squeezed the clutch lever thinking it might be a safety switch. Still nothing. Good thought tho Dave!

I don't know your fuel system but if I read correctly you have a 2005 1600 FI. If it is fuel injected, prior to this problem, could you hear the fuel pump pressure up the system when the key is turned on? Is it making the same sounds now as before? How much fuel is in the tank? Just a starting point for troubleshooting.

A note on safety, be very careful with that starting fluid. More than one person has done costly damage to their engines with that stuff. Spray it through your air filter if you are going to use it. You can hurt your engine if you get liquid in the cylinders.

Snake ranch, when I turned the key it made its usual whine as the pump pressurized the speedo needle swept and all the right lights lit. I'm stumped.

How about the DFI (Digital Fuel Injection) fuse? It's a 15 amp fuse located beside the ECU which is beside the battery. As sitting on the bike, the fuse should be tucked down on the left hand side of the ECU.

I didn't check that fuse! I didn't know there was a seperate fuse there. It's on the opposite side of the bike of the fuse block? If I was sitting on the bike it's by my left thigh?

It's in the battery box area. The battery is on the right side, the ECU is on the left side of the battery and the fuse is just to the left side of the ECU. It will look like an inline fuse.

In the same area where the diagnostic connector lives.

I think Bob may be on the right track. Below is a link to a picture.
The site is incorrect when it says this is the fuse for the bullet connections under the seat.

The 15 amp fuse you see is a spare. Check the fuse inside.

Budman, thanks for the link to that picture. That is the fuse for the DFI system.
