No More Cigars For Me

Well; I made a decision I can hopefully live with. It will be two weeks this Saturday that I have not had a cigar. That was when I woke up feeling awful with a bad flu bug and cold.Im still getting over it now. It caused me to cough so much that I was throwing up, and shivering with a fever for a few days. That seemed to be the final straw for me as I couldn't even think about lighting up a smoke. In all fairness , I havn't enjoyed them like I used to the last few months, it was more of a habit. So far it hasn't been to bad getting out of my old routine. I used to have one as soon as I got home from work at night, and then another with my morning coffee, and another before I left for work. Even this weekend was tolerable, I did have a bit of an urge a couple times, but quickly put it out of my mind. I think the real test will be when Im sitting around with my pals, having a beer with them. Thats when I'll be at the weakest point I think. My thirteen year old son used to ask me to stop, every time I would light up. He always told me that they are bad for you. Hopefully thats the end of them for me, and if some of the others here can do it, theres no reason why more of us here can't give them up also.

Listen to your son he's giving you good advice :) It's all about breaking the habit, i smoked 20 years ago but gave up when my wife was pregnant with my son, it was hard at first but it will get easier.

I "smoke" cigars but have never inhaled the smoke. I've never had craving to light up like I had a habit for over 20 years of smoking them. I've gone on vacations for over a week and never missed them. Not claiming therefore I'm healthier for it. I just know where I'm at with them.

Congrats Ringadingh! You're cutting your risks for oral cancer!!! Even if you didn't inhale! It's easier when you're sick and can't smoke for a few days...the hardest part is behind you already!

Well I inhaled. Like a madman. For 36 years.

I'm glad I quit. I tell myself that every time I get a craving to smoke one.

(I MAY get drunk and smoke one with BD at Mesquite just for yocks, but I will never have this daily smoking habit again as long as I live. I will NOT. It just sucks too bad.)

Christ, I was smoking so much I was getting freakin' toxemia. My pillows were yellow from sweatin' out the nicotine at night.

Grit you teeth and just do it. It'll hurt, but do it anyway Ringadingh.

Well, I'll admit I've never smoked and inhaled. I've smoked pipes and cigars, but didn't inhale. I don't really know what your going through Ringadingh, but I can emphathize and only imagine. Good luck with it.

Good luck. Tobaco is a tough thing to get shed of but is definitely worth it when you do.

Sorry you were sick but great you're making a positive out of it. Good luck you will be glad.

My 25 yr old son smokes...he is in the Army - they tested his lungs and told him he has the lungs of a 52 yr old, he also has high cholesteral and is borderline hypertensive. If he could give up the smokes he could reverse all of that at his young age. He knows he's in the medical field - just says can't give up right now. Hopefully he'll be ready one of these days.

No More Cigars For Me

Thanks for all the support guys! Its a tough habit to break but Im doing ok so far. I used to smoke cigarettes when I was younger and the I quit for about 20 years before I took up cigars for some strange reason. They crept up on me very slowly over 2-3 years. At first I would have one about once a week after a BBQ on Saturday nights, never inhaled them. Then I would have one on Sunday after dinner. Well after a couple summers doing that I started smoking them more and more, year round and inhaling them right down to my toes. Its been like that for at least the last five years. Anyway enough is enough and its time to make a change. Thanks again, Steve

CaddmanQ....I had quit for over 10 yrs and didn't even know I had one one night...yes I had had quite a few drinks...anyways that was it and I started smoking again until I was tired of it...about 2 yrs later...my mother-in-law quit for 2 yrs and 'just had one' also...and now she refuses to quit...you might want to rethink that smoke with bd...it's a wicked tricky thing tobacco is!!
