There's lots of those stock mufflers floating about used from guys that bought custom exhausts. If you screw yours up you'll be able to find replacements cheap enough.

I know Kawasaki charges $450 per muffler, but nobody ever pays that except insurance companies.

You can usually come up with a complete set for around a $100.00 from what Ive seen on other forums. Drill them out and see what happens.

Hey bugman

Drilling out that baffle is the easiest thing I have done on my bike. It took less that 2 minutes to drill each side out. Just use a big drill 1/2" or larger lots of torque. I used a 1 3/4" hole saw for metal, buy a good one. I then used a 1 1/8" dowel rod from Home Depot and I wrapped it one time over with masking tape, it fit right in nice and smooth. Next use a cutting oil instead of WD-40 it will help cut faster and cooler. Once you have drilled thru just grab the baffle with some vice grips and they pulled right out. I then used a 3/4" drum sander and ran it around the cut and it slicked everything right up. Paint it black and I swear you can't tell that anything has ever been removed.

The low rumble is so Sweeeeeet!!!!! Plus it is a lot cheaper than buying the aftermarket pipes.
Good luck

Bugman, Just follow Nomad1600 advice to the letter and you will be fine. I dont know who monitors this site so I will just say that my friend drilled his the same week he bought the new bike. It had two hundred miles on it. It is just what the bike needed. Deep rumble at low rpm and quiet on the highway. My friend had the same chicken feelings and is so glad he went ahead.

OK heres what you do. Wait till your wife is asleep. Sneak into the bedroom and make sure she is sleeping soundly. Find her purse and open it real quietly. Then reach inside and GET YOUR BALLS BACK. Then you can go drill your mufflers.

Jeez, TC, that was funny! Reminds me of an old Sam Kinison stand up bit.

Enjoyed that T.C. I would probably tell my wife that I read on the internet that drilling the baffles out makes the bike have fewer breakdowns and ride smoother. That would make us both laugh.

So TC, THAT'S how you do it? I've always wondered. LOL.

All I can say is, just do it bugman. You won't regret it.

I know what you mean about being a chicken. I found a set of used stock pipes that had 2000 miles on them and drilled those out. If something went wrong, or I didn't like the sound, I would put my stockers back on. I thought $100 was pretty cheap insurance. My bike had 550 miles on it at the time. Go for it, it's very easy.

The baffles come out in one piece so if you don't like the sound you could have them welded back into place. That won't happen.
