BD my 48 Cop Car...
Brad, this is the departments 48 Chev that I get to take care of. It has a mustang front end on it, Bill Dunn upholstery and all the good stuff. It was built mainly from donations and assembled by our mechanics at the Police garage in there spare time. Its a real kick to drive espically when I'm in uniform...

I just wish it was mine and not the departments, but I guess I have the next best thing. Something breaks I take it to the garage and have them fix it, no appointment necessary!

Very cool car. I've always been a big fan of the fat fendered era myself. Here's a rather fuzzy pic of my '47 Plymouth coupe, some years back when the paint was still shiny.
I'm embarassed by how rusty it's gotten just sitting around waiting for me to restore it again, but the past decade was devoted to other projects, and now she's sitting on my side driveway waiting for re-restovation. I'm having a hard time deciding if I want to put this big Dodge flathead 6 in it with the '49 mopar overdrive tranny, or gut it and swap in the 350/TH350 from my Caprice Classic. Decisions, decisions.... ::) |

Caddmann; Leave your old car stock when you restore it, I think it keeps the history of the era alive. Also when you start change stuff like drivetrains you can't stop at that. Interiors, AC, power everything, rearends, etc, start getting installed and you have years of time invested when you could be driving it instead. Unless you plan on driving it a lot, leaving it as it was designed originally would be my choice.

It's kind of a tough choice. I drove it almost daily for over 5 years and completely wore out one (more or less) stock powertrain. Most of that's been rebuilt as well, but brakes and wiring will need to be done again, and the guts of the powertrain are all out of the car right now.
The thing is that when I got it 25 years ago it wasn't exactly "original" but was a mild custom done in the 60's. Now it needs so much work that it's almost a blank canvas. The good news about restoring is that Mopar used the same guts for so many years that mechanical parts are easy to find. The bad news is that a few of them are really too costly. For instance I didn't run an original carburetor, but a much better and cheaper one from the 60's. An original Carter was way to expensive, and they tend to leak & get poor mileage. Ditto with the fuel pump and some other items. |

Nice car JJ! I borrowed one of those from a friend to go to a drive-in movies (anyone remember those)? I forgot to remove the speaker from the window and ripped out the back window. ouch. My first ride was '46 Plymouth, straight six with "Fluid Drive".......
