Color of Exhaust Residue

I did a search about this subject, but didn't find anything that related. Didn't find anything on Google either!

Back in the old days (and that is a long time ago) my Dad advised me that if an auto exhaust had more of a medium brown color inside the pipe, the carb was set about right. If the exhaust was black inside the pipe, the carb was running too rich. If it was sooty black, there was a real problem.

Since most of our vehicles have fuel injection now, including later model Nomads, I wonder if that still holds true.

What color do you think the pipes of a properly tuned Nomad should be?

thanks for your help,
BnG

I'll agree with your dad. Mine exhaust ran black until I turned the TPS down to about 4.40V DC and now they are brown. It was set at 4.52 from the factory

I've never head of a FI Nomad's TPS that high before (4.52). Mine was 4.40 and now it's 4.43. It doesn't die at idle on occasion like it used to anymore.

I appreciate your comments. My bike's pipes are black for sure but the engine doesn't ping either. It is a 2006/1600. After reading the Gadget article, I think it would be a good idea to take some readings and maybe be able to tweak it even better.

Thanks again for your comments and direction. That's why I like this forum! BnG

I'll give that a try within the next few days, weather permitting. Hopefully that will cure the running rich condition. My bike doesn't ping, I just hope it doesn't start pinging after I check it. Thanks for the info.
