Clear Coat ideas

My clear coat around my gas cap is peeling. Rather than redo the clearcoat I was wondering if there might be a chrome (or ?) mod I can put around the gas cap to hide the peeling? Any ideas?

I thought about leather but not sure how it would hold up with the gas splattering during fill ups.

The leather would absorb the gas splatters. I guess if it were me I would just clear coat it again. Can't think of much else I would be able to do.

I think covering it up would make it worse, it would trap any leaked gas and make the paint go softer faster.Reapplying the clear coat is the best fix.

Spray Max 2k is a 2-part aerosol clear coat. There's a mechanism to break a vile inside the can that mixes the two parts. An epoxy style clear coat is the only thing that will stand up against gas and like chemicals.

Spray Max 2k is about $22 per can, but if a professional job is too expensive ?? This stuff and a little elbow grease should do the trick.

Good luck!

Someone on this site, many moons ago, had a custom tank chap that went around the gas filler hole.
I don't think it looked very good but it probably did what you want.

So, do you peel off the old "stuff" and then apply the new "stuff"?

Next time carry a small rag and polish in your bags and when a little splashes on the tank, take care of it asap.

How Bad is it now? If is still concealed under the cap, you might fix it with fingernail polish. You can cut that with acetone to brush it out, (slow the dry time) Acetone is what women brush on nail polish to remove it. Getting acetone on you isn't real good to do, but the're just women.

You could always order a "rickyboy" from Franks leather Prod.
http://www.franksleatherproducts.com/
Or design your own and include the bit around the gas filler/spout. It's not like I have a pat. on it.
I have had no problem with the gas deteriorating the leather. Then again I don't drip gas when I fill up.

I bought the bike used and it already had the clearcoat problem. I should have fixed it at the the time.
