Intermittent Noise

2007 Nomad 1600 (approx 35,000 miles). Has an intermittent noise from rt. side engine area, best described as a whirring as though something that is rotating is rubbing something else. In gear, in neutral, clutch in, clutch out - these do not affect this noise. Switching the engine off & restarting it makes the noise stop. The noise may not reappear for several days or >100 miles. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

It may be the cam chain tensioners, idle control solenoids, or the noisey valvetrain. Check out Gadgets Fixit site, theres a lot of good info there to read that may help pinpoint the noise.
And welcome from Ontario.

Ring nailed it. My first suspicion is cam chain tensioners...about the right mileage.

Yup....... get a steel rod around 12 inches + and with the engine running place it like you mean it, near the sparkplug well at right side rear plug, and your best ear against the rod, so the rod tends to push the ear closed. In other words don't stick rods in yer ears, but get good skin/ bone contact and you will hear it LOUD and Clear.

Once you get the idea on doing this, this way. Reach up and turn up some throttle EASY, then let go of the grip which will make the sound for sure as the chain slaps on the plug well tube.

If it is the cam chain tensioners don't let the dealer tell you it has to come apart for new chains to be installed.
You can buy an extension to fix the problem very inexpensively.
