rear brake pad

So, I'm riding the Nomad yesterday and hear something dragging when I hit the brakes. A little bit of attention told me that the rear brake was the offender. No chance to look at it yesterday and today I had a long day at work. (14 hours)

Home at 9:30 and double checked my parts bin and found that I only have new pads for the front. GRRRRRR. Pulled the rear caliper and found that the RF pad will work on the rear. The difference is that the rear pad is thicker (when new anyway) than the front ones.

I installed the RF brake pad on the rear and will test drive the bike tomorrow to make sure it works. I hope so because I'm supposed to attend a memorial ride on Sunday and won't be able to get another set of pads before that.

If this works I will get a rear set ordered and change them out and put my front set back on the shelf for when I need them.

The rear and right front are the same pads, they have always shared the same p/n anytime Ive ordered them.
You can leave your pads installed and just replace the front set for your parts supply.

Steve, that is interesting. The shop manual says has a different PN for front and rear and claims that the rear pads are a lot thicker. Good to know that the ones I have on are going to be fine. Thanks,

That may possibly be the case for oem pads, as new pads are only about 1/8" thick when new. Ive wondered why they woudn't have made them a little thicker.

An eighth of an inch isn't much. I have often wondered why they don't put a bit more rubber on tires. Of course we all know the reason. The less that is on the pads and tires just means they will wear out faster.

Kawasaki does show different part numbers for the front right, and the rear pads, BUT all the aftermarket manufactures lists them as the same. I'm running the EBC HH pads on the rear, and they are the same part # as the front right. Have had "zero" problems with them. I keep a full set on the shelf for future use too.

The thinner brake pad material may be done intentionally to help with quicker heat dissapation. Or as Gene said to have you buy more pads and tires sooner.

If Pirelli made tires the right size for my bike I would run them.
They have lots of tread and wear great.
I put a rear on Cindy's 900 and it has 6000 miles and shows hardly any wear.

The backplate on the orginal rear pads and the RF OEM pads is exactly the same. It works like a charm. I may still buy a set of OEM Rear pads and return my 'new' RF pads to the shelf.

rear brake pad

i just did my brake change using aftermarket pads
got a great deal on a full set of the pads for all brakes.

i echo steve's experiance - the front right and rear pads were the same
and they work fine on my rear brakes.

you should be fine.

Bud, I would leave the RF pads on the rear wheel rather than put them on the front along with the new pads on the front left when the time comes. That is unless you don't plan on leaving them on the rear very long. Just my opinion.

Okay, I'm sold. I will just pick up a new RF set and put them back in my parts drawer. Thanks you guys.
