*Cough* *choke* you want to charge HOW MUCH?
So I'm in the middle of a tire change....
ordered the tires in (two different places - going darkside). Got the bike up on the lift, took some time, but got both tires off and they're loaded in the car. I have a buddy who was willing to help me change the tires/rims by hand, but after all that work I figured I might just keep it simple and pay someone for that part. Called a local bike shop, asked the right questions ME - change two tires, one front and the other is actually for a trailer, bike rim car tire - can you do it.... Shop guy - hang on.... yup no problem shop guy - Just to confirm, these are loose - rims are off the bike Me - yup, they're in the back of my car right now. Shop guy - yes, we can do it. Just to let you know the cost is $75 PER Tire, but I can get you in right away. me- .... *choke* uhh okay, I'll see if I can pop over this afternoon.... maybe.... $150 to change the tires, and I've already pulled the rims off the bike...... Wholly crap! I wonder what the cost would have been if they were still on the bike? Then, he tells me

wholly crap is right.
My local independent bike shop charges $20 if I bring in just the wheel, the local Honda dealer charges $30 for the same thing. Your guy is a rip off artist......... ::)

Wow, my dealer charges $50 if you buy the tire elsewhere and bring it in off the bike. If you buy the tire from them the charge $15 to mount and balance. There tire prices are comparative to cyclegear.

I'm sorry, but there is no way in Hell that there is enough labor involved to charge $150 to change two tires. That guy is just a rip-off greedy smack-face.

Its about $30.00 a tire here if you take them in, I do my own now. Its takes me about 15 minutes to get the old one off and the new one on most times. I can't drive to the shop in that time.

I even called back to confirm it wasn't 75 for both.... nope, 75 each.
I think I'd going to be doing it myself now. Any reccomendations on where to get tire irons? There is a set at princess for 40, and ATV ones at crappy tire for 20 each.

My guy charges me $80.00 to mount and balance both front and rear tires, that is on the bike. Getting to his place is a very nice 1 hour ride, we bullsh*t while he is doing his thing and I give him $100.00 every time. He runs his business from his garage and has virtually zero overhead. Great guy, great wrench and great prices. His shop rate is $50.00 and hour and he is a certified Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha mechanic.

Rode my bike in to an independent guy that works on bikes he did everything and cost me $40 for the rear. Later went to a bike shop and it cost me $50 for everything for the front. I just don't do tires period so it is well worth it for me to ride in and get everything taken care of.

Sounds like he was busy and didn't want to change your tires unless it was REALLY worth it.

Wholly Smokes, that guy is a rip off. Where I get my tires changed, if I bring the tire and wheel in, he only charges me $10, That includes speed balancing, and if I buy the tire from him, mounting & balancing is free. And a big plus is he is only 1/4 mile from the house. It only takes me about 15 minutes to get the bike up on the lift, and the front tire off. the back takes about 30 minutes. equal amount of time to reinstall each.

I hear ya....
so I'm doing it myself with my bud. The other downside - I needed to pick up some dynabeads from the only place in town that carrys them. $44 for 5oz of beads..... This is why I do as much of this as I can myself..... crazy!

A 5oz bag of beads directly from Innovative balancing is only $10.90, not including shipping.

I got my tire irons at harbor frieght.cheap! used a 2x4 wedge and longer one under the bumper of my van for a bead breaker.Added dyna beads.About 30 min a tire.Rear one was a ct.I found out it is easier to just pour the beads in the tire before airing up.Could never get them in the stem.
