Oil in the wind.....
I have a 03' 1500 with Chuckster's dual plate on it and I continually have oil on the rear cylinder rocker cover and right hand side cover. The bottom of the filter is always wet with oil coming from the crankcase breather tube. Is this an issue for others with the same set-up?

Ive never had that problem with my filter assembly, and its very similar to yours. Are you sure its not a cam plug leaking. Thats a common thing on our bikes.

Nope Cam plugs are good; replaced them last year. I can wipe the bottom of the filter base at the dual plate and get motor oil.

Had an old 351M in a Ford pickup that did the same thing. It had leaky piston rings raising the pressure in the oil reservoir causing a lot of oil to be pushed out. I have the Caddman mods on my air cleaners and I get oil in the right side can from the crankcase vent. It doesn't drip out however. Someday I probably need to add an external vent filter. Can you check your compression on both cylinders to see if one is lower than the other?

I only personally know one member that has the Chuckster's intake, and he uses a crankcase breather. you can see it here on Gadget's site.....
http://gadgetjq.com/cc_breather.htm I have the Thunder Stealth intake, and when ever I clean my K&N filter, all I ever see is a light oil mist about the size of a quarter around where the crankcase breather tube comes in.

I have a 2003 with a Baron's Big Air kit and had oil in the filter. Installed a crankcase breather filter and no longer have a problem. Keep all the filters clean.

I'ld need to see pics on this set up with the air filter off, showing the new location of the breather fitting on Chucks backing plate, and need to know the filter type you use.
I suspect this combination has more vaccum than the breather system can deal with, but I don't know that. The filter, what ever that is, wetted with oil has created more vacuum, and has actted something like a seal, and is drawing a vac in the breather hose, pulling more than oil vapor, but I don't know that. The breather should huff and puff, breathing both ways. Any filter on a breather hose is mostly to keep out bugs. In time they gather oil vapors and need to be replaced. Some [people who run this type of filter also have made a oil bottle condenser, which is a baffled bottle with a drain. The baffels catch 85% of oil vapors and this leaves the breather filter cleaner longer. I am betting a 2x7 wet filter is the most of the cause of this. Another thing you could try ios to order up a 1985 Volvo flame trap element for a B 21 FT engine. That "T" means turbo, othjer wise the engine number is just the rest for a normal engine. This brass element should be cheap, and looks like a electric lighter element. It differs in material, and the coil has dents in the flat wire it is made off. Each dent makes a point which holds the flat wire off from itself wrapped in a coil. In this way there is limited air space in the wrapped coil of flat wire, so air can blow by both ways. The size is apx the same OD as the breather hose is ID. The coil location should be several inches from the end of the breather hose, perhaps located closer to the engine side fitting, with a clamp above and below the element. If this is done, once a year the breather hose should be removed and flushed out to prevent the element from clogging. That is std on Volvo cars equipted. The why is the very same problem. The Turboed air rushing by the engine breather draws crank case oil. Once you see the device anyone crafty could make their own of a brass feeler blade leaf 12 inches long, but may need several leafs to get the OD right. For that you would need a finish nail set, and nippers, plus brass stock around 0.015, and a nail mandrel locked in a vise to spin it up. ![]()

You should only be sucking air from the crank..but if your oil level is to high then you will suck oil.

My 03 always had oil in the filter. After I went with the crank breather everything has been dry and quieter.

Put a crankcase breather filter on my '05 and it's working great. Keep's main air filter(K&N) clean. Keep's the huffing noise reduced. Plus adds more chrome. Cost less than $20.

Nothing wrong Brik, I have the same issue. I have to wipe the right side cover at every fuel stop. If you wash your bike without covering the dog bowl you have more of a mess as the residual water drips carrying a little oil with it. I think I will look into a crankcase breather.

Cajun, what size air filter is it you have? I run Spector 9x2 and don't have that problem.
I am thinking, maybe, 7x2 is a little tight and causes a higher vacuum at the filter, which could draw cranck case oil. If this is correct and add on breather filter is the way to go.

Mac, I have the 7" K&N which is what the dual plate mod is designed for.

It's a little surprizing a K&N filter does that since they are considered the best of the free flow filters, but evidently they are a tad restricted in that size. Not for engine operation, but for the slight extra vacuum, just enough to pull engine oil from the breather. I am 99% sure I am right and the size is just to close for/to the engine breather.
More or less this is like blowing over the top of a pop bottle to make a hooting noise. If you get to far away it won't work. Or if you filled that pop bottle with water and somehow could blow air over the top, at better than 125 MPH you would soon drain that bottle dry. I had that happen with a good beer on the top of Mt Washington once. And there went my New Years Eve beer! Manitoe took it ![]()
