Gears Ratio Info
One O' you mugs sent me a pm wanting tranny gears ratios to compare to a Hardly
![]() I sat about doing boring math and came up with these figures. The hardly figures were plain given to me. Gear Ratios —1st 2.50 = 10.29 :1 —2nd 1.59 = 6.317 —3rd 1.192 = 4.736 —4th 0.965 = 3.83 —5th 0.781 = 3.105 .............................................. Harley gives: Overall Ratio: 1st 10.110 :1 2nd 6.958 3rd 4.953 4th 3.862 5th 3.150 Just figured someone else would have asked sooner or later. ![]()

It wouldn't have been me asking. After seeing the ratios I know so much more now Mac. If you multiply 0 X 0 you have zero. That is exactly how much I knew before and know now.
Actually I do know some but not enough to even be dangerous. I am sure there are some that might need the information. The only ratio I know about is a 4-11 rear end in the cars of the 60s and 70s. I know they were pretty fast off the line. Gas mileage was pretty $hitty though.

In the book there is 2 ratios to multiply plus the gear ratios given for the final answers. I just made it easy I hope, and hope I didn't make any error, but I don't think I did.

From riding with a couple of my pals who ride HD's, I know that they are very close. We shift at almost the same time, and the bikes seem to pull about the same under normal riding.
Your results seem to prove what Ive always figured.

The only thing though, is you can't change any of it. It is what it is.

After installing my 27" truck tire my RPM's are within 80 rpms of a six speed Harley in top gear. I couldn't use a 6th gear unless I had a tail wind all the time..
