Front wheel removal

I'm getting ready to remove the front wheel for a tire change and wanted to know if you have to remove the fender or will the brake calipers clear the disc without hitting fender? Thanks for any input

Front wheel removal

Hate to see a man without an answer.

The fender is not removed. Pull and support the calipers. Don't know about the 1600, but the 1500 has an axle nut and a pinch bolt; both are removed and in that order. Then out comes the axle. The 1500 has two spacers; one each side of the rim hub.

Removing the axle is slightly different on your 1600. A tool is required to loosen the axle, but the caliper part is the same.

For the Tool Ringading mentioned all you need is a 22mm bolt with the nut welded on the other end, there ya go cheap and effective tool :):) Can't claim credit for this idea ,actually recieved it from the forms here on Kawanow....good sight or what :)

Actually you should loosen the pinch bolt first, then remove the axle. If you can't get the nuts welded onto a bolt then just run two of them together, put the head of the bolt into the axle and use the inside nut to back out the shaft. By doing it this way the inside nut will bind into the outer nut and everything will stay put on the bolt. hopefully.

It is pretty easy, in this order, loosen the pinch bolts, loosen the axle (using the 22mm tool), and then loosen the calipers (two bolts each side). Raise the bike off the ground, (doesn't have to be very high). Then remove the bolts from one caliper, rotate it back toward the crash bar, and use a string and tie it off on the crash bar. Then do the same to the other side. Then finish removing the axle, there is a spacer on each out board side, so catch them as the axle is pulled out. Now you can roll the wheel/tire out from under the fender.
When you put it back together, install the axle through the spacer, wheel, and other spacer, and snug up the axle. Re-install the calipers loosely, and let the bike down. Torque the calipers, then the axle. Then as hard as you can, bounce the front forks up and down 6-8 times, then torque the pinch bolts. This makes sure everything is aligned.

The spark plug socket that comes with the 1600s also fits the front axle.
