Threads are gone........

I lost the threads in one of the holes that holds the bolt that secures the driver's seat. Anybody been down this path? The obvious would be to open the hole up and tap it to the next size. But I would like to hear some other options. What about a Heli-coil?

Do you have a Grasshopper back rest I read some where that someone was having problems with the bracket busting the paint around the hole

I don't know how thick the metal is in that area. My thoughts would be the heli-coil first and then do the drill and tap.

I just left it alone. I mean after all where is the seat going?

Mine has had only one bolt n it for 2 years now.

I know of one member (I won't mention names) who doesn't put either bolt in his.

Me too, I havn't used the seat bolts the last couple years, I just carry them around in the beerbox. Around here Im not concerned about anyone stealing my seat, so its not proplem.

You probably would be OK with just the one screw, but if you really wanted both (and for them both to be the same size), I wouldn't use a Heli-coil. Heli-coils are good for something that you put together, and leave it together, but not for repeated assembling and disassembling (like putting your seat on and off). I would strongly recommend using a "Keensert". Keenserts are designed for repeated assembling and disassembling. You may be able to find them at a good auto parts store. Here's a link to explain them a little better. We get them from a fastener company called "Fastenall"

I think it's just a nut under the fender that's welded in place. I doubt there is enough depth for a helicoil to work well. I'd tap the hole to the next size (7mm?) and use the appropriate bolt.

I forgot about Keenserts. They are quite common on equipment and I have used them before too.

I am with Scott, I would just do the rethread to the next size. Heli Coils can be a pain. I used them a lot at work.

That's one of the things I love about this forum, when a group puts their heads together, they can figure out just about anything, even if it's just dusting off cobwebs from the back of your mind.

Another option I just dusted the cobwebs off of, and would probably work even better in this application would be an "Allen Nut", but it also requires using a drill...... ::)

If all else fails you could drill out the stripped thread and put a nylock nut on the bolt from under the fender ? Not very convenient but as a last resort ?

The ones in my 99' are still intact; it was the 03' that stripped.

I took mine out because I got tired of messing with them when I need to take the seat off. Haven't had an issue with it yet.
