Old Indian... just love old bike pics...

Here is a old picture of a guy on his Indian.

I love old photos of "biking back in the day". Guys like this had to be a unique breed back then.

The bikes were pretty crude compared to today's bike.

It is common to see pics from this era and earlier where they are riding in mud and dirt -- mostly since that is what the roads were like back then -- so they didn't have a lot of choice if they wanted to ride.

Another common picture-scene is where they are riding in the winter snow -- especially photos from the early 1900's.

Anyone else have any pics like this?

You didn't happen to see a date on that pic Greg? I'd say 40's or early 50's?? Just a swag.

I luv those old pics, they make nice posters to hang up in garage and bar

Would have put on a different kind of footwear for a little more protection ::)

Mitch... I don't know the date. I got the pic in a group of old pics from a guy that found them at an old motorcycle garage in Indiana.

I do believe you would be looking at the later 40's with that pic. Most of the pics included the same guy. He raced motorcycles (mostly Harley Dirt Racers) and rode the "K" model. I haven't done any research; but I believe that would have still been in the later 40's. The pics of the "K" bike appeared to have the "flathead" motor on it -- thus that would have still been in the 40's. I am only guessing at this moment; but plan on looking it up (can't keep all these bikes and models in my head).

I noticed the guy's shoes. Looked like dress shoes, and dress pants -- only that he rolled his pant up and under (one large fold). I assume he did that to avoid having his pants "eaten-alive" by the chain!!

Back in those days, bikes would hurt you bad... even if you were just moving along slowly

PS: Got to love the leather bags with studs... and the bike's kick-stand jutting-out behind the fender. I never quite figured-out how anyone thought that kind of kick-stand was a good idea; other than the fact that it would hold a bike up on dirt -- and that is mostly what they had to ride and park on "back then".

Speaking of dirt... I see pics like this one all the time from "back in the day". These guys must not have had too many paved roads to ride, or else they were simply nuts. (Note the bike furthest away in the pic has a side car.)

I don't know exactly what these bikes weighed; but I would guess somewhere around 500-600 lbs. In other words, they wouldn't tread mud too well; but rather would plow-through it.

Anyone taking their Nomad off-roading in the soft-mud? LOL!

He's not on this forum anymore but I'm sure Dan Lund would try it, or has tried it.

This year at the Oswego Speedway for the classics, first weekend of Sept., that's what the campground beside the track looked like ??? Had to go about 1500ft in it to be able to get the bikes on blacktop ::)
Not impressed

I'll tell ya Timebandit... the tires were a bit different then... which might have helped some; but with today's tires... no thanks man.

That must have sucked riding that far in mud to get out of the place.

TC... I know Dan did ride on dirt roads plenty of times before. Not so sure he tried mud though; but I am sure he would give it a try.
