Plug and Play ?? Hard wire no more!

I'm going to get a TFI and have been watching threads with interest and some helpful input from macmac and others. I am leaning towards the Dobeck TFI from Custom Dynamics for $ 191.95 free shipping. Anyway was going to get the hard wire; splice in kind as Mac suggested. I called C.D. as their web page didn't indicate the hard wire part number. They say they no longer carry the splice in kind; as there was to many technical call in problems. To many people installing incorrectly; then calling them to correct. I can naviely accept that, as I have seen same sceniro happen throughout life. Also sales/tech fellow says, if you do find the hard wire kind they are old stock/design anyway. Now the guy seems to be on the up D up; but it is for sales for C.D. or the gospel. Again I'm naviely leaning towards gospel.. and going for plug and play and using dielectric grease. I guess one could cut off connectors and turn TFI into hard wire; but would void TFI warranty? Again can't thank all you folks enough for your expertise/knowledge.

Plug and Play ?? Hard wire no more!

Strictly my opinion, but if there is a plug and play version available, I don't know why anyone would want a hard-wired version. Too much room for error.

I'm with Scott on that issue, why do it the hard way when there is an easier and almost foolproof method of doing it. No confusing wires to worry about. Just plug that sucker in and your done.

It's almost impossible to screw up a plug and play, it's fast and easy, save yourself some head aches and get the P&P.

If I recall correctly the plug and play was more expensive at the time I was looking. As I'm not into splicing and soldering, I was willing to spend a few extra bucks for the p&p. Didn't like it but willing to pay for getting it right the first time.

Mine's P&P, too. I paid extra--it wasn't THAT much more--for the sake of knowing that I didn't have to get in there and cut, solder and splice myself.

It does take away a little of the "I did it my way" aura, but there are some things that I now tell myself, "I could do it. I HAVE done it. My time is more valuable."

For a few bucks more, go plug and play. Nearly foolproof. The only thing you can do wrong is cross your injector cables. Doing one at a time eliminates that screwup.

Plug and play means easy undo if getting warranty work done or if it fails (which is extremely rare).

Plug and Play ?? Hard wire no more!

When I bought my 2 as I had on on the 01 as well solder on was it. That made choosing easy.

Since i solder fairly well, I could custom trim the wires, which made the install neater, not having any need of coiling extra wire.

I did make it removable, probably faster than plug n play. I simply soldered on short pigtails at the ecu. My way doesn't require even touching a tank bolt at all, but I read a while back that the bold type was going to become history, so it is no surprise these are not for sale anymore.

I don't really see any way to get in trouble with either type, unless mixing the 2 similar ecu wires would be it on green/blue wires as the Nomad ecu had these 2 similar wires.

One is green with blue the other blue with green. The blue may be gray.

The other wire is pink and blue or may it's gray too. I did check with a Ohms meter at the injector plug for the green with blue to make sure on the ecu end i had the right wires each of the 5 times I installed one, to be certain I didn't make that error.

Some how some people I read about managed to cook the TFI units setting up power incorrectly, but I am not sure how that was accomplished.

I am not sure but think the plug n play units have No power wire at all, and pick off power from the injector wiring directly.

Pretty much for me to find that out is to have someone have me install one.

The old type is all I know and mine has never had so much as a hickup.

The plug and play Dobeck TFI has one wire. It goes on the battery negative terminal.

redjay, It must have other wires plugging in at the injectors too right?

The frame is as ground as is the (-) battery terminal.

Yeah Mac, The injector connections are separated with the TFI connectors plugging in to the engine connectors and the injector cables plugging in to the TFI connections. Easy as apple pie.

Mac, correct. Two leads for the injectors and one wire to the battery.
