I have never changed a cam chain on a Nomad, and I read the engine must come out, and be taken down pretty far.
MAS probably knows better than me if there is a cheat. I have pulled cheats on many engines, but won't go so far to say that it can be done on a Nomad. But if it can, I would set up the engine at TDC number 1, and paint the marks and to there their alignment marks are on the respective case markings, so i could be certain the engine didn't move. Then with a lot more speculation cut the old chain, install the new, and drop and pull, drop and pull untill the new chain can be fastend with a link. But I don't KNOW that this can be possible. The tensioner bodies would need to be removed from the engine too. There could be many reasons this cheat can't happen as well. Last since no one seems able to get the valve covers off and or the rocker bodies off the engine will at minum have to be dropped that much.

You have to pull the motor. You have to pull the top half of the head (they are two part) and they lift up over the studs.
Sorry I wish it were easier, but if that chain has stretched that much then something is really wrong. I went 45000 miles before installing extenders. MT

That is some bad mileage on the cam chain extenders. Something must have gone wrong with installation. 5,000 miles isn't much at all. Shoot Wompus a PM as he has a post about hitting 100,000 miles and see what all he has done to his Nomad. With 30,000 miles I would think you shouldn't have had to install the extenders yet.

I almost wonder if the extenders fell off, at the install, and are laying in the bottom of the case somewhere.

It wouldn't end up in the crank. the front one would be bouncing off the stator and or the counterbalance and the rear would be bouncing around the clutch basket.

Stranger things have happened.
Maybe it is stressed and about to break. It's hard to say for sure. MT

When I talked to Joe (chuckster) he said he did not even use locktite anymore I did when I put mine in. I guess the position of the tensors hold it in place once there in place but he has done lots of them. He taps them on good!

After installing a set last week on my 99 at 25,000 miles something smells fishy here. Pull the back tensioner and see if the extension is still in place.

I'd be surprised if they fell off during installation. I've used red high temperature loctite on those that I've installed even though I didn't think it was needed. Joe drills the extenders with very close tollerances. When twisting the extender onto the push rod there is a tight spot. I always stop at the tight spot to eliminate any remote, extremely remote possibility of the extender falling off during installation. Crapper, I don't intend this question to be an insult, but the tensioners were fully retracted when you installed them, right? No possible way they were completely retracted and inadvertently extended during installation? I just can't understand how those chains stretched so much so quickly. Again, no insult to your mechanical skills intended.

When I did Flavors bike I have 8 and 9 teeth showing after the new install, not a hole 5/16th" deep. I sure don't understand.

I was talking to the judge (Bob) tonight and brought up this thread. He said if the extenders were installed wrong maybe with them not all the way in while installing it could have messed up the plastic guides Although I put extenders in mine he said he has never had to use extenders in his bikes
