“I have only two men out of my company and twenty out of some other company. We need support but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machinegun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold.” ~1st Lt. Clifton B. Cates, USMC, Belleau Wood, 19 July 1918

"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank GOD for the United States Marine Corps." - Eleanor Roosevelt

That 1st Lt (Cates) went on to become a General.

"One of the few officers of any service who had commanded a platoon, a company, a battalion, a regiment and a division under fire, he won nearly 30 decorations. In addition to the decorations already mentioned, Gen Cates’ medals and decorations include: the Presidential Unit Citation ribbon with three bronze stars (Guadalcanal, Tinian and Iwo Jima); the World War I Victory Medal with Aisne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Defensive Sector clasps; the Army of Occupation of Germany Medal; the Expeditionary Medal (China-1929-1931); the Yangtze Service Medal (Shanghai-1930-1931); the China Service Medal (China-1937-1939); the American Defense Service Medal; the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal with one silver star in lieu of five bronze stars; the American Area Campaign Medal; the World War II Victory Medal; the National Defense Service Medal and the Netherlands Order of the Orange Nassau with crossed swords and rank of Grand Officer."

General Cates also held doctorial law degrees from the University of Tennessee and the University of Chattanooga.

I wonder why that is? No other service enlists that kind of loyalty.

I was a grunt in the Army 72-76 and can tell you I hated the military. I did my time because I grew up in a family where every male pulled his time. I can tell you one thing I'm proud of. Not one bar in West Berlin was ever infiltrated by the East! :)

Maybe it would have been better if I had enlisted at a later date and not as a grunt. To this day I have a lot of respect for guys that can do 20 or more years. Especially in a combat MOS. I would imagine a REMF could do 20 a lot easier.

Congratulations to the Marine Corps. Little brother of my Navy. I'm still loyal to the Navy and the Army after all these years. More loyal to the Navy although I have been out of the Navy since April 1971.

You had to go there didn't ya Gene? We learned a long time ago to admit that the USMC is part of the Navy........the better part.

I remember it as the Navy being a part of the Marine Corps. ::)

When I was in aviation maintenance school in TN, it was at a Naval Air Station. There were 8 Marines in my class and 22 squids. Since some of the squids outranked us, we had to march in their formation at their cadence. Humiliating.

I'm sure that you have a good case for a PTSD claim.

The USMC was established to provide security on navy ships.
I guess they needed some bad asses.
