you guys are gonna love this. I took the fire and steal factory back rest off. I want a grasshopper but im always broke so lets see what i can do. Placed the F&S back rest up behind the seat. Nope wont work. Wait just a min. If i unbolt the lower brackets on the back rest flip them around? done. ok got a bolt on the rear portion of the F&S back rest. The forward most bolt on the rear fender fit perfect, but I need a front bolt? hmmm. beer! beer! beer!. ah ha shock bolt. Fabed up a metal strip for each side. Positioned it to the angle i liked. Bolted up and wala a free back rest. hahaha

There's a guy on the Delphi forum who did something similar, except his backrest angles forward some. Doesn't look real comfy to me.

Sheeze you wouldn't feel "comfy" unless you had a keg tapped into the handlebars!!!

here are the results of my handy work. I did 300 miles this past weekend and wow what a diffrence a backrest makes. I think it looks purty It is very comfy , although i may have to make an ajustment. I may lean it back about an inch or so just to give that laid back feel. This was my first 300 mile ride and my back never once hurt. It kept my in proper sitting position all day.

Looks like some nice fabricating you did. How does it feel to you? I might have to try something like that one day.

it feels really good. I think it could go back just a touch but other than that its great. Its simple to do really. As you can tell the angle on the luggage rack is not exactly right but it works for me!!!!!!

Looks like you eliminated the rear seat which would be ok with me. What did you do with the bolt holes that hold the seat bracket on? Do you think that those brackets could be made from 1/4 x 1 aluminum which could be polished out some? Could the luggage rack be modded to get it back to level?

Thanks DC

Not sure what your talking about when you say bolt holes. If your talking about the bolt holes on the rear fender for the rear portion of the bracket? I just put the bolt back in the fener. The bolt holes on the bracket were all used. yes the brackets could be made from 1/4 alum. Just make sure they dont touch the seat because this would cause wear on your seat an eventually cut the seat. Now the luggage mod is gonna be difficult but it could be done but it would need to be shaved some.

On the 99 there is a plate that is bolted to the top of the rear fender with four bolts. When removing the seat this bracket would also need to be removed leaving the hole in the top of the fender. When you say it would need to be shaved on the luggage mod where are you talking about?

Thanks DC

just find four chrome bolts to put in them. If you look at how the rack bolts to the back rest it bends around the shaft. you would need to shave one off.
