Gene, the shale oil is located between very thin layers of rock. It is very difficult and expensive to get it to the surface. For years Shell Oil spent billions of $$$ in research, technology, and drilling attempting to get that oil to the surface with very poor results. They and other majors are still working on it and are making very slow progress. They will eventually get it right but the expense will be astronomical. Deep water drilling is very expensive but when they complete a well, production from that one well can be 100,000 bbls per day of oil along with several million cubic feet of natural gas. That well pays for itself within a year or two. A shale well may produce a couple of hundred bpd or less. The payback takes too long to draw much interest from smaller companies.

I have seen reports on this on TV. Like Cajunrider said, it's so expensive to extract that gasoline will have to be $6.00 a gallon for it to become economically viable.

Well for as much money as is being dumped into 40 mile distance $41k electric cars it might be more economic to develop..... but then thats being blocked and sabatoged from proceeding by the anti-oil activists.
Bom Bom and his view on fossel fuels is going to by his own words insure that gas prices will hit $6 anyway.... at least after the elections in November. They are still blocking drilling which amazes me hasnt caused the price of gas to sky rocket already. Of course its an election year and as the history of election years show.... things seem to stay cheap so someone can take credit to get elected just before they raise prices after they get elected. Anyway, there is so much hocus pocus BS being told its hard to tell anymore whos zooming who on whether its actually a viable fuel source. But reality world is that the world power is based on fossel fuels and to just stop without an already in existence alternative is lunacy. The rationalization that we need to stop funding the MidEast oil mongels fails the "If that were the actual reason and goal, why arent we drilling in America" test. Facts back up wind power is unreliable, battery powered cars still need electricity as well as the environmental disaster the batteries will cause, nuclear has waste no one but Iran wants, solar is still a supplemental source ..... face it unless they come up with another source as readily available and as efficient as oil/coal etc...... we are going to pay for it and it aint gonna be cheap. Administration blocks more Bush-era oil shale development leases http://articles.latimes.com/2009/feb...na-oil-shale26

Mitch and Dave, I have to admit I know very little about getting to oil. I know how to drive up to a service station, correction gas station. There aren't any service stations any longer. Anyway I do know how to drive up and put my debit card in and then pump the gas into my vehicle. Other than that I know very little about oil wells, drilling or extracting oil from shale. I just thought it was interesting to see how much is available.
