Aiming light bar spots
I installed my Cobra Light bar yesterday, and thanks to several previous posts on the this forum, I think we did it the right way. Wired it into the auxiliary fuse panel with a relay, replaced the stock switch with an auto parts store lighted switch, and ran a ground wire for the lights. I love the look and extra light.
Now for my problem. I really don't know how to aim the spots. Let me first say that I think my headlight is aimed OK. I have good visibility and I have never had anyone flash their brights at me. For the time being, I sat on the Nomad with engine running and lights on in the driveway and the garage door closed. I adjusted the spots to shine slightly lower than the horizontal light line of the headlight with the spots just outside the span of the headlight line on each side. Looking for information as to how these spots should be aimed to see if I am even in the ballpark.

Sounds like your close the way you did it, I think Gadgets sight has a how to on aiming lights. As long as they are very slightly to the right you should be ok.
I have mine set a little low and to the right and Ive never had a problem with people flashing at me.

My method is go out to a back road at night. I bring tools to adjust them and a paper bag to place over one, and a bigger bag to cover the main lamp. Of course i live rural.

Thanks for the tips, I think I will try riding it some tomorrow and see how they light up the road.

I think you have the right idea with the angle of your lights. The dealer told me the lights are supposed to be wired with the high beams but I have mine wired independently so I can turn them on with the low beams. I do not do a lot of night driving so I want them on during the day when travelling on the highway just to be a little more visible.

I also wired the cobra lights on their own circuit so I can turn them on and off regardless of what the headlight is doing. I aimed mine by moving about 25 feet from the back of the garage and having them at the same level as the lowbeam. I then angled them in by about 3 degrees to the right. Then took it out at night on a fairly dark road. Holding the bike as upright as possible, I made small adjustments on the spots so that they filled out the same distance as the lowbeam. I also swapped the 25 watt bulbs for 35 watt bulbs. I do a lot of night riding and the illumination is great and have never had anyone flash me. During the day, it's hard to miss me (but I know some still do).

I swapped my 35W for 55W and they made a big difference on dark roads.

I don't know about others but I set my left auxiliary to fill in under my hi-beam. It just seems to let me pickup things in the roadway a lot easier at speed.
There are a lot of deer around here so I set the right one to actually point down into the ditch and set the height somewhere between where the hi-beam hits and the low-beam hits. It's amazing how many deer "eye's" you can light up this way, ones that you would totally miss otherwise. It's actually somewhat scary at times but ignorance isn't bliss in this case. I can't say that it has actually save me from any collisions yet but it's actually caused me to slow down sometimes so who knows? |
