Starting cold engine in hot weather
I have an 02 1500 that stalls immediately after starting a cold engine in hot weather. I start again and it stays running. When I start in cool or cold weather it does not stall or if I let it set for 1-2 hours it does not stall. I live in Central Texas where it is hot from May until October. This only happens once the temperature gets in the high 80's and above.
I clean throttle body every 6 months. Any Ideas? thanks in advance Login or Register to Remove Ads |

The only thing that comes to mind is colder air is denser which may give you a richer fuel mixture than warm air. That would explain why it doesn't stall in cooler weather. Just a stab in the dark.

If it is carb model:
If the engine is cold pull the choke knob all the way out and start. If it doesn't catch right away then twist the throttle once in addition to the above. Above 95°: do not use the choke knob; twist the throttle once and start. This works 50 miles south of you. ![]()

Chappi, Being it is a FI model, a fuel processor would probably solve your problem.

Try turning the key on and off a couple of times, this will prime the throttle body. Perhaps the pump is weak or doesn't hold pressure right away.

Mine does the same thing and has since I bought it new last year. If I open throttle a bit it will keep running. If not it will die about 10 times out of 10. After it dies and I hit the starter it starts right up and runs without giving it any throttle. I would think that with fuel injection it would keep running just like a car, but it sure doesn't. I have never really worried about it. Guess if I pull the choke out a bit before trying to start it guess it would keep running.

Before I go replacing the pump Id check the internal tank filter and see if its plugged. That may be all it is restricting your fuel flow. Im not sure if there is a test for the fuel pump, I assume there is, that will determine if its a pump or plugged filter.

The cool weather is back and it starts and never stalls, just idles nice and smooth. Got to be what cajunrider said about the cooler air being denser and give the engine a richer mix.

yeah it's lean and you NEED a fuel processor, all injected Nomads do. If you do nothing else all Nomads NEED that.

If you move up north where I am, just think how nice your bike will run for much of the season.

Starting cold engine in hot weather
Ive ridden the bike in to work every day so far this week, today was the warm day at 24f at 5:30am. The motor really seems to run better in the colder temps, but I lose about 50 miles to the tank in mileage.
