I finally found out...

...just how far I can ride on a tank of gas. I had let my tank get low in anticipation of removing my tank this weekend. The fuel light came on while I was riding home from work on Friday, and I had gone about 15 miles beyond that. My bike sat in the garage while I messed around with the fairing. I decided to go get gas, thinking I had a good 15 miles left. I was heading to a gas station about 5 miles from home, and around mile 3, it gasped and died. I restarted it, and was able to make it to the next light, same thing about a half mile later, and it happened a couple more times.

Long story short - 194.7 miles on a tank of gas. I put in 5.079 gallons of 89 octane.

And how fun is it to push 850+ pounds of Nomad to the gas station?

No, I managed to get to the station on its own power. The last intersection I had to go through to get to the gas station has 4 lanes in each direction. I'd hate to have had to push it across that.

While I have never had to try this on my Nomad, rocking the bike from side to side before restarting has helped me get further down the road on a previous bike.

I ran my tank empty to take it off and do some work. I added back about 3/10 of a gallon to go 2 miles to the gas station after I had finished my wiring job but she started sputtering at the 1 mile mark. Like you, I cranked 'er back up - a couple of times before getting to the gas station.

It was up hill so I knew I had no chance of even pushing the bike.

The lack of throttle response and sputtering is a very uneasy feeling.

It's never a good feeling to see that light come on knowing the nearest gas station is a long ways away.

Especially when you're pulling the trailer and your wife looks over your shoulder every 1/10 mile and keeps telling you "We're going to run out of gas."

I ran on fumes in Judith Gap, Montana. I got to the gas station but the sign said, "Gone to Sportsday, Back at 6PM"??? Luckily the average 45 miles per gal. that trip got me to the next station but it was dying. No 91 octane AGAIN just 98F. I can't feature doing any pushing.

Time for the EFI and a small gas bottle.

Your right on the money with your distance travelled,Ive done that a couple times now, and my best is 202 miles to the tank.
And one time I could have shattered that record. It was in Elkins WV and at 185 miles my low fuel light had just come on when we filled up. I figured I could have done at least 230 miles on that tank. We had been riding at 40-50mph most of the day on that particular ride.

I wasn't paying attention to my yellow light one time and when I finally got to a station I put in 5.2 gallons.

I finally found out...

My '01 1500 has a reserve on the petcock, no low fuel light. Do the 1600's have a reserve on the petcock or does the light take it's place? By the by, if I tried 197mi with my Nomad I would probably have a heart attack at about 125mi. I fuel at 100mi weather I need it or not. I just love a carb with a small tank.
Thanks for your time
