Fuel Processor
I don't particularly have any problems with the way my Nomad runs, but I've noticed in the past threads concerning fuel processors. My question is in what cases is it necessary to have one. Secondly, is it something I could install, or should I have someone with much more experience than I do it ?

It is not a hard job to do. You have to lift the fuel tank to get to it. I purchased the Cobra FI2000R and the instructions told you everything you needed to do.
The Nomad seems to run cooler after the fuel processor is installed. It also tends to eliminate any hesitation you may have had in the past. Others say you can start using 87 octane gas instead of the 90 octane as the owners manual says to use. I still don't use the 87 octane but I do sometimes buy the 89 octane and the bike runs just fine on it. I am sure others will reply to this thread and then you can be the judge as to whether you want it or not. Some swear by the fuel processor. I am glad I spent the $200 plus and got mine. It has run great ever since I installed it.

Thanks, Gene. How long did it take you to do it ? Do you need to do any special set up of the processor, like install settings ?

The link will bring you to a thread I posted with pictures of my installation. If you do purchase one and need help, let me know.

Painless, since you live in the south where the weather gets hot, you may benefit a lot from a fuel processer.
Lots of Northerner's say they don't need one but that's due to their environment and elevation. I live in Southern California where sometimes the weather can get pretty warm and I'm at zero elevation. My Nomad pinged like a pig on premium. California's premium is only 91 Octane. I understand other parts of the country 93 is available but not here. a processor was mandatory for me.

BD, I have used 89 sometimes with no pinging. I have to admit that I have not used it on a regular basis in the summer. I am leaning toward a processor, but I don't know about the decreased mpg. We do have 93 octane here, and that's normally what I use. I looked at Mitch's pic on installation, and it looks pretty easy. I might give it a try.

My bike pinged on 93 before the TFI install. Now I can run regular and no pinging.

Frank, run you fuel tank down until the warning light comes on before blocking up or removing the tank. It will be much easier. I lost a little on my mpg but not enough to even talk about. I don't have it set very rich as I use 89 octane most of the time and 87 only in the colder months. To and from the Hill Country, I used 93. I still get some ping pulling the trailer in hilly terrain with less than 93. I could eliminate it by richening the mix up a little more but then the mpg will drop significantly. Experience talking.

That's good to know . Helps a lot with my decision. I'm gonna go ahead and try it. I don't pull a trailor. Usually, it's just the two of us, but I was concerned about the mileage, and you've put my mind at ease. I guess that's the good thing about being able to adjust it, as you said, you can put it at the setting that suits best. Thanks.

I run 87 octane as if it were the only fuel. I live in NH as well, and I think all Vulcans modified or not should have a fuel modual installed.
I get better MPG's 40 to 44....
