Trying to figure out how much life is left on the rear Dunlop E3. It has 5/32 tread life left. The minimum is for safety is 2/32. This tire has around 9500 miles on it.

Question for the brain trust, How many miles would you figure are left???

After this tire is gone I am planning to go to a car tire. Just to cheap to do it before I need to.

You may squeeze 12,000 miles out of it if you aren't too aggressive. 3/32 isn't a whole lot. Just go to tireseasy.com and order yourself a Dunlop SP 5000 195/60-16 and have it shipped to your door for around $100. That isn't a bad deal, even for a cheapo like me.

Mitch, I'm actually looking at a 205/60 size tire. Comes closer on the diameter.

That's about what I was thinking. The trip to Cortez is 500 miles each way and with a couple of routes I will be pushing 2000 miles for the week. Add to that I have all of May to ride yet and I may be looking at trading up a little earlier than expected.

Good grief man!!!! I hate to push a car tire on somebody, but you need to go there! At the rate you're going you gonna need a motorcycle tar every three weeks or so!

If you're running on 5/32, y'all pushing the envelope anyway. You can loose a 32nd by washing the tire hard. :)

Joel, what was the tread depth when it was new? You should be able to get 3 to 4,000 more miles out of it. You can take the tread depth when it was new and subract what you have remaining and divide it out and it will tell you how much mileage you got out of each 32nd.

I found with my D404 I used to have that it wore down faster at the end, than rather the first say 6,000 miles.

You are right Joe. Most tires do wear quicker closer to the end of it's life. It's almost as if the rubber compound is softer as the tire wears.

On my last rear tire it was low on tread, we went for a 400 mile long ride one day and when we got back I had a couple cords starting to show. They do seem to wear a lot quicker at the end.

I think I read in one of the posts that the 205 is real tight. Anybody want to chime in on that one.

No need to push. I am ready but just waiting to get this tire worn out. A new tire every three weeks?? I wish I was riding that much. I put this tire on very late in 2008. So it has one full riding season plus on it.

How safe do you feel knowing that tire is on the back and may give out at any time? Ask yourself,
do I spend the $150 dollars now or $50,000 on possible medical expenses from a blown out tire?

Al, the tire looks really good right now. If I was just doing local stuff here and there I wouldn't even be worried.

2,500 tops, after that it is borrowed time. That last bit is the area where tires fail for keeps ..
