Arizona Immigration Bill

This is in the LA times today:

L.A. Councilwoman Hahn calls for boycott of Arizona after recent passage of tough immigration law
April 27, 2010 | 10:33 am
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn waded into the national debate over illegal immigration Tuesday, announcing that she intends to call for the city to boycott the state of Arizona in response to a newly passed law requiring immigrants to show proof of citizenship.

Hahn, who is running for lieutenant governor, said she would ask her colleagues on the council to take steps that would require all city departments – including the Port of Los Angeles, Los Angeles World Airports and the Department of Water and Power – to end any contracts with Arizona-based companies and stop doing business with the state.

The proposal will be introduced during Tuesday’s council meeting and debated on May 4, according to a statement issued by Hahn.

Arizona lawmakers recently passed legislation that would make it a crime to be in the state illegally and requires law enforcement officers to check the legal status of those they suspect are undocumented. The legislation would also bar people from soliciting work or hiring workers under certain circumstances.

Hahn’s proposal drew fire from former mayoral candidate Walter Moore, who unsuccessfully pushed for a ballot measure to allow the Los Angeles Police Department to arrest, deport, prosecute and imprison gang members who are in the country illegally, even if they are not accused of another crime.

Moore said the council should address a projected $485-million budget shortfall before taking a stand on laws in other states.

“They can’t even balance their books and yet they can issue edicts about far-flung jurisdictions,” he said. Moore voiced support for one part of Arizona’s law but called some of its provisions “counterproductive.”

The Arizona legislation, which was signed by Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday, has created a national firestorm as opponents and supporters bill it as the nation’s toughest law against illegal immigrants. Brewer cast the law in terms of public safety, saying, "We cannot sacrifice our safety to the murderous greed of drug cartels."

Brewer said she would order the state police training agency to form guidelines to train officers to protect against racial profiling.

But President Obama has denounced the measure as “misguided.”

Obama signaled that a legal showdown might be possible and that his administration would "examine the civil rights and other implications" of the law. Department of Justice officials said they "were reviewing the bill" but declined to discuss the legislation further.

Immigrant rights groups have vowed a court fight, arguing that regulating immigration is a federal matter.

Unless opponents can stop it with lawsuits, the law will take effect 90 days after the legislative session ends this month or in May.

Personally, I am for this bill. It may not be the ideal way to curb the illegal immigration problems in AZ, but it's better than anything Obama is doing to help.

There are over half a million illegal immigrants in AZ (estimated). Just because they happen to be primarily of one nationality, doesn't make it racial profiling. The law applies equally to illegal immigrants from ANY country. They are sucking our schools, hospitals, and social programs dry.

I seriously doubt this law will ever be enforced though. The economic pressure is starting to mount and the state will give in.

Scott,

I sure hope that Arizona doesn't buckle on this. Something needs to be done about this. The other night an idiot stated that it is immoral to ask illegal's to carry the proper paperwork. I thought I heard it wrong and replayed it twice. Ummm, if they are illegal they won't have any paperwork.

Not only is this issue bleeding Arizona dry, it is having a major impact on most States where there is a large illegal population. Colorado has a large population of them as well as California. Just look at the trouble California is in.

To me, if the Fed's don't want to do what they need to, just don't get in the State's way of doing the right thing.

By the way, what has Obama done about illegal immigration?????? NOTHING!!!!!

I actually took time to read the bill. Doesn't look like it is abusive to me. The bill follows most of the federal guidelines that are already in place. No wonder the feds and everybody else don't like it. Arizona just made it official that they will enforce the laws. Guess everybody missed the word Illegal, the people that are legal don't need to worry.

And nowhere in the bill does it state "Mexican, Hispanic or Latino". Wait until MT adopts it to go after all the Canadians infiltrating the Big Sky Country.

Scott,

I support Arizona's attempt at doing what the Federal Govt. refuses to do. Personally next week my wife and I will do our part to bust the economic boycott of Arizona.

Hang in there, the majority of the whole Country is behind you. Texas is next. I don't hold much hope for California though.

When Napalitano was Az Gov. she and the Atty Gen fought Sheriff Joe Arpio about him charging Illegals with human smuggling. They tried to stop him. Since she is no longer there all the Sheriff's can do their part. She is now in DC. Head of Home Land Security I think. What does that tell you about the present powers that be?
Thanks for your time

This shows the ignorance of California politicians. They get a good share of their electricity and I believe water, from Arizona. Talk about cut off your nose to spite your face!

If anyone calls a boycott of Arizona I will do my best to find a way to spend $ in that state. Internet shopping will probably go through the roof. All we need to do is post that idea on Facebook and it will take off like crazy.

I am tired of politicians getting away with advocating breaking federal law. I've said it before and I will say it again; every mayor and city councilman/woman in so called 'sanctuary cities' should be arrested by US Marshals and taken directly to fed prison.

If this move in Arizona fails then we all need to decide which federal law(s) we will ignore. Same damn thing if you ask me.

There, I'm better now. a little

One more thing,

Ms. Napolitano is on TV indignant about this Az law claiming that she knows that border better than most and that it is as secure as it ever was.......................

RIGHT, IT NEVER WAS SECURE. AND SHE IS IN CHARGE OF NATIONAL SECURITY!?!?!?!?!?

About 75 miles west of where I live is the largest nuclear power plant in the USA. Most of the power generated there supplies SoCal, so does the Mojave Generating Station at Bullhead City. Hoover Dam supplies a lot of power to CA as well. I'll bet there's more.

California suffers tremendously from the effects of illegal immigration, but they won't address the problem.
